About the Role
Curative is seeking an Actuary to own the pricing of the company's ASO (self-funded) product line, focusing on employer stop loss pricing. This role is central to quoting, renewing, reserving, and reporting for the self-funded block, involving end-to-end actuarial responsibilities from manual and experience rating to state rate filings. The position requires close collaboration with Underwriting, Sales, Account Management, Finance, and Operations, as well as state regulators, to drive growth and profitability.
Responsibilities
- Own specific and aggregate stop loss pricing for Curative’s self-funded ASO groups
- Maintain and enhance the stop loss rating methodology, including trend, credibility standards, group-size risk load, expected loss ratio targets, and retention build-up
- Price new business and renewal quotes across all plan options, communicating rate rationales directly to Underwriting and Sales Teams
- Manage end-to-end ASO pricing models, continuously updating core inputs, network blends, administration, and specialty rider pricing
- Conduct experience studies for the self-funded block, evaluating large claims, leveraged trends, credibility, and actual-vs-expected stop loss performance
- Manage state stop loss rate filings and actuarial certifications, ensuring compliance with state regulations and Actuarial Standards of Practice
- Partner with Underwriting to refine stop loss underwriting guidelines, eligibility rules, and claim review procedures while providing final peer review and technical validation
- Support settlement and experience-refund reporting, renewal strategy, and executive reporting on stop loss and ASO financial metrics
- Mentor junior actuarial staff and provide technical review of their work
- Performs other projects and duties in support of the company as required
Requirements
- Working knowledge of self-funded/ASO plan mechanics and employer stop loss coverage, including specific and aggregate structures, attachment points and corridors, contract basis, pooling, lasering, and terminal liability
- Strong technical grounding in excess-layer pricing: claim probability distributions, leveraged trend, credibility, and risk/contingency margin
- Strong analytical skills and creative problem-solving abilities with attention to detail
- Advanced Excel modeling skills; able to build, audit, and document a multi-tab rating model
- Ability to translate and effectively communicate results and implications of actuarial, data, financial, and underwriting analyses to non-actuarial partners, executives, and regulators
- Ability to effectively coordinate and manage matrix stakeholders to execute on projects and priorities
- Capable of independently driving multiple projects and workstreams

Experience Level

Education Level
- Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, finance, economics, business, computer science or related degree
- Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) designation required
- Fellow (FSA) and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) preferred
- Candidates who meet the U.S. Qualification Standards to sign actuarial certifications in support of rate filings are strongly preferred
