About the Role
Underwrite and develop a portfolio of marine and energy liability business, contributing to the profitable growth of an established and well performing account. The team operates collaboratively, supported by specialist claims functions and the financial security of Mitsui Sumitomo, offering a genuine lead book, broad appetite, and the backing to write meaningful lines.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite and manage a portfolio of marine and energy liability risks, making sound long term decisions within the agreed appetite and authority.
- Contribute to the lead book, taking underwriting positions the market follows.
- Proactively develop and pursue new business opportunities, clients and products.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and trading partners, representing the syndicate at market meetings and events.
- Structure solutions that balance client need with profitability, and negotiate terms with confidence.
- Monitor portfolio performance, identifying trends in pricing, claims and emerging risk, and contribute to portfolio reviews.
- Support the continued development of the account as the energy market shifts, including the growth we are seeing in power and utilities.
- Work closely with our marine and energy claims colleagues so that the claims proposition forms part of what we offer clients.
- Analyse and write risks in accordance with our appetite and guidelines, making sound, profitable long term decisions.
- Understand and negotiate wordings in line with corporate standards.
- Undertake analysis of the portfolio to identify business opportunities, products and clients, building a robust business case for each.
- Drive the client experience through oversight of issues raised, including product design, liaison and claims management.
- Act as a peer reviewer on risks and material endorsements as required.
- Play an active role in regular underwriting meetings and ensure the risk entry system is maintained.
- Produce accurate class reports, review underwriting figures regularly so that unusual trends or adverse movements are dealt with, and monitor premium payments.
- Remain alert to developments affecting the class, its profitability and its opportunities, reporting to leadership as appropriate.
- Maintain underwriting documentation and records to a high standard.
- Underwrite within your agreed authority, syndicate policies and regulatory requirements, maintaining high standards of governance.
- Conduct your role in accordance with the company's Business Ethics policy and ensure compliance with relevant risk, regulatory and legal requirements.
- Effectively represent yourself and the class in external activities, groups and committees.
- Share market intelligence and technical knowledge across the underwriting team.
- Contribute to wordings and product development.
- Act as a referral point and support the development of less experienced colleagues.
- Act as an ambassador of our company, raising our profile in the market and proactively strengthening our reputation.
- Build long lasting trusted relationships, developing client insight and ensuring fair outcomes.

Requirements
- Marine or energy liability underwriting experience gained in the London market.
- Experience of leading business, or the technical depth and confidence to move into a lead role.
- A track record of writing new business and developing broker relationships.
- Sound technical judgement and the ability to make decisions under time pressure.
- Strong negotiating, networking and relationship building skills.
- A good understanding of relevant risk, regulatory and legal requirements.
