About the Role
The Head of Market Development is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and developing market opportunities to drive ITM's long-term growth strategy within the hydrogen sector. This role leads the Market Development team to assess market attractiveness, develop market entry strategies, establish key industry relationships, and enable expansion into new opportunities. The role also involves leading the development of market, customer, and competitor intelligence to support sales teams.
Responsibilities
- Assess market attractiveness, identifying and prioritizing new geographic and industry sector market opportunities.
- Develop strategic recommendations for entry into new markets, geographies, or industry sectors.
- Assess emerging industry trends, technologies, policy developments, and regulatory changes to identify future growth opportunities.
- Establish the company's presence and credibility in target markets through industry engagement, partnerships, and strategic initiatives.
- Create and maintain a pipeline of future market opportunities and strategic growth initiatives.
- Identify, develop, and maintain partnerships, alliances, and ecosystem opportunities that accelerate market entry and growth.
- Create strategic customer relationships which give ITM access to early project involvement and selection.
- Lead early-stage customer and stakeholder engagement activities to validate market opportunities and demand.
- Oversee the collection, analysis, and interpretation of market, competitor, and industry intelligence.
- Develop and maintain competitive intelligence on electrolyser OEMs, assessing product positioning, commercial offerings, cost competitiveness, and strategic direction.
- Provide strategic market insights to executive leadership, product management, and sales teams through regular market assessments and competitor insights.
- Research and compile data and insights to support sales activity with evidenced, market-relevant information.
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Business Development professionals operating across multiple territories.
- Provide strategic direction and prioritization to ensure regional activities align with market development objectives.
- Lead and develop the Market Intelligence Analyst role, ensuring market insight drives strategic decision-making and opportunity development.
- Foster a high-performance, collaborative culture that encourages innovation, market curiosity, and customer-centric thinking.
- Build relationships with key industry stakeholders, customers, regulators, industry bodies, and potential partners.
- Represent the company at industry conferences, events, and working groups.
- Collaborate closely with commercial, technical, product, and operations teams to align market opportunities with organizational capabilities.
Requirements
- Degree-qualified in Business, Engineering, Energy, Economics, or a related discipline.
- MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification desirable.
- Demonstrable knowledge of hydrogen, clean energy, industrial gases, or the wider energy transition sector.
- Significant experience in market development, strategic business development, commercial strategy, or growth leadership roles.
- Proven track record of identifying and successfully establishing business presence in new markets, sectors, or geographies.
- Experience of working in multiple international markets, including those relevant to green hydrogen.
- Experience leading and developing geographically dispersed commercial or business development teams.
- Strong understanding of the hydrogen sector, energy transition landscape, industrial gases, clean energy, or adjacent markets.
- Strong strategic thinking and market assessment capabilities.
- Excellent commercial acumen with the ability to identify and prioritize high-value growth opportunities.
- Advanced stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
- Strong leadership and team development capabilities.
- Ability to analyze complex market data and convert insights into actionable plans.
- Highly effective communication, influencing, and presentation skills.
- Strong project leadership and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
- Comfortable operating in ambiguous and rapidly evolving market environments.
- Proficient in written and spoken English.
Education Level
- Degree-qualified in Business, Engineering, Energy, Economics or a related discipline
- MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification desirable
