About the Role
Quantum Motion is seeking a pragmatic and skilled Software Engineer to join the Intelligent Automation (IA) team. This team builds the mission-critical software layer that enables hardware experts and IC engineers to acquire data more efficiently, analyze experiments, and control quantum processors. You will contribute to the software stack development, focusing on systems that power our quantum computing platform, including backend QPU control software, database and queue management systems, and user-facing APIs. Your work will involve prototyping, testing, and refining solutions for production-ready systems, contributing to architectural decisions, and shaping the evolution of our software. This role is ideal for someone who considers the wider system, including reliability, maintainability, and performance.
Responsibilities
- Maintain the prototype software stack and develop the next generation for future deployments.
- Collaborate with hardware experts to understand requirements, scope, and develop new features.
- Benchmark and scale components of the stack for the next generation.
- Improve integration testing across the software stack, including building custom dummy devices and digital twins.
Requirements
- A minimum of a 2.1 degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline from a top university.
- Over 4 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Strong proficiency in Python.
- Experience designing, developing, and maintaining complex software systems.
- Ability to make informed design and architectural decisions, balancing scalability, maintainability, performance, and reliability.
- Experience working across multiple layers of a software system, understanding component and interface integration.
- Experience profiling, benchmarking, and optimizing software to identify performance bottlenecks.
- Exposure to C, C++, Rust, and/or GPU programming and optimization.
- Proficiency in Git and version control best practices.
- Strong collaborative approach with good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently to achieve goals.
- Experience building simulators, digital twins, or other software models of complex systems (desirable).
- Experience developing software interfaces for hardware, particularly laboratory instruments, scientific equipment, or other technical devices (desirable).
- Experience in preparing technical reports and presentations for key stakeholders (desirable).
