About the Role

The Senior Portfolio Underwriter manages, monitors, expands, and optimizes portfolio products for HSB’s largest and most critical client relationships. This role is key to achieving profit and growth objectives and driving business growth through new product introductions and performance management of existing clients. The role requires acting as a thought leader to devise innovative solutions using HSB’s resources and capabilities to maximize client partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, monitor, expand, and optimize portfolio products for key client relationships.
  • Introduce new products and manage the performance of existing client companies.
  • Devise innovative solutions by leveraging HSB’s data, products, and services.
  • Utilize creative data analysis methods, including diagnostic and predictive analytics, to understand and optimize product performance.
  • Develop targeted strategies for corrective actions, ensuring rate adequacy, precise price segmentation, and identifying emerging loss trends.
  • Examine claims, engineering reports, expenses, exposure data/profile shifts, pure premium trends, and third-party exposure data.
  • Craft and deliver compelling client presentations on financial results, data analyses, rate assessments, and loss trends.
  • Act as the technical authority for clients and the Client Integration Team.
  • Make crucial underwriting decisions with binding authority that impact the company’s P&L.
  • Achieve profit and growth targets for assigned book of business.
  • Negotiate and resolve conflicts.
  • Develop creative and unique solutions.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects and issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelors or equivalent work experience required.
  • 7+ years of P&C insurance/reinsurance experience.
  • 5+ years in Underwriting preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of commercial and personal lines insurance and reinsurance coverage, concepts, principles, exposures, and processes to drive profitable results.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate large data analysis into actionable decisions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of rate development (pure premium), price segmentation & detecting leading loss trends.
  • Past experience with responsibility for achieving profit and growth targets for a book of business.
  • Demonstrated experience with negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Exhibited ability to develop creative and unique solutions.
  • HSB Product knowledge and previous experience and familiarity with HSB is desired.
