About the Role
The Medical Assistant I is an unlicensed health professional primarily responsible for assisting patients throughout routine visits and aiding in health management. This role involves collaboration with healthcare team members to deliver comprehensive, quality, and accessible health services under the supervision of a medical provider or nurse.
Responsibilities
- Works closely with medical providers to provide comprehensive health care to patients.
- Prepares for patient visits by ensuring all necessary labs, diagnostics, and discharge summaries are readily available.
- Assists in clinical services including taking vital signs, performing EKGs, immunizations, skin tests, vision and hearing tests, and blood draws.
- Collects and prepares specimens as necessary.
- Ensures complete, accurate, and timely documentation for all patient encounters, including vitals, health maintenance, screenings, vaccinations, medications, and questionnaires.
- Operates various medical equipment such as electrocardiogram, audiometry, bilimeter, glucometer, spirometer, HbA1c meter, protime reader, pulse oximeter, and autoclave.
- Administers vaccines and medications after verification with an RN or medical provider, adhering to the five rights of medication administration and barcode scanning compliance.
- Adheres to vaccine funding sources (VFC, VFA, BAP, DPH) and protocols.
- Measures and describes TB skin test reactions, referring interpretation to an RN or medical provider.
- Prepares and restocks exam rooms before and after each patient according to NEMS policy and OSHA guidelines, including instrument sterilization.
- Assists providers during physical examinations, treatments, and procedures.
- Assists with patient discharge by reviewing visit summaries, aiding in medication/lab/radiology orders, providing patient education, and answering logistical questions.
- Arranges for hospital admissions or ER visits as required.
- Makes appropriate referrals to internal and external agencies.
- Refers telephone or drop-in triaging cases to a registered nurse or medical provider.
- Assists patients with ambulation and transfers (e.g., wheelchair, Stryker chair).
- Completes required forms for various programs (e.g., authorization, referral forms).
- Tracks and follows up on patients with ongoing health care needs (e.g., health screening, cancer screening, glucose, cholesterol).
- Rotates to other clinic sites or medical departments as needed based on operational requirements.
- Monitors and records refrigerator and freezer temperatures.
- Assists with interpreter needs for patients.
- Participates in achieving organizational goals, including clinical and CAHPS metrics.
- Reports incidents promptly and accurately, ensuring timely communication of relevant details.
- Actively participates in all mandatory training sessions.
- Reviews, responds, or forwards patient portal messages to ensure completion.
- Performs other job duties as required by manager/supervisor.
Requirements
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Medical Assistant certificate from an accredited school required.
- Documentation and completion of 160 hours of externship or 1 year of work experience working as a Medical Assistant required.
- Type at least 35 w.p.m.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills.
- Current documentation of Basic Life Support is required.
- Nevada Only- Laboratory License required.
- Must be proficient in computer usage Microsoft Office and EMR (EPIC is a plus).
- Must be able to fluently speak, read and write English.
