About the Role
Samba TV is seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer to join their team in San Francisco. This role involves working on a new AI-powered product with a real-time, conversational interface, spanning the entire request path from AI/agent backend to Node/TypeScript service layer and React streaming UI. The position offers opportunities for architectural direction and leadership in front-end development.
Responsibilities
- Design system architecture across AI/backend, service layer, and UI, including orchestration, protocols, contracts, and error handling.
- Build and extend backend services and AI layer, managing model interactions, streaming, state, and persistence.
- Own and extend the Node backend-for-frontend, building endpoints, streaming responses, and enforcing authentication.
- Ship and provide front-end coverage for a streaming, chat-style React interface, including interactive charts and document previews.
- Provide technical guidance through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship.
- Implement robust handling for streaming and asynchronous operations, including state management, reconnection, and error handling.
- Raise quality through comprehensive testing, instrumentation, and debugging across UI and services.
- Understand system behavior and dependencies to make informed product and implementation decisions.
- Collaborate with product, design, and platform engineers, and mentor other engineers.
Requirements
- Senior full-stack engineer with experience owning features and systems end-to-end.
- Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js, writing clean, type-safe code.
- Experience with backend services, APIs, REST, and SSE.
- Meaningful, hands-on React experience and a solid grasp of the web platform.
- Experience with streaming and asynchronous state, reconnection, failure handling, and rendering performance.
- Ability to lead front-end work when needed.
- Architectural thinking, ability to weigh trade-offs, and write clear design documents.
- Experience shaping technical direction for a team.
- Solid understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL) and SQL.
- Proficiency with Git and CI/CD.
- Understanding of cloud deployment (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Experience operating deployed applications.
- Ability to explain technical ideas clearly and give constructive reviews.
- Openness to feedback and ability to disagree constructively.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Typically 6+ years of professional full stack/web application development experience.
- Experience providing technical leadership on a team.
