About the Role

The Ethics & Independence team protects the firm and drives quality by ensuring compliance with independence requirements. This role supports and enables client-facing teams and individuals with their personal independence, including personal connections, fit and proper considerations, and financial interests. The team conducts relationship checks for client take-on and continuance processes, ensures compliance with regulatory and governance obligations, reviews ethics breaches, performs compliance monitoring, and provides digital support for Ethics and Independence practices.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to formal Ethics and Independence consultations covering a broad range of independence-related queries.
  • Handle non-audit service approvals.
  • Manage fee consultations.
  • Address other independence tasks and consultations requiring mandatory Ethics approval.
  • Monitor and retrospectively review tasks completed by client-facing teams to confirm compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Work on ad-hoc projects.
  • Execute work consistently on time at expected volume and quality levels, in line with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate a "can do" attitude, taking ownership of work from start to finish.
  • Use judgment to analyze independence matters, identify relevant risks, and apply appropriate safeguards or escalation routes.
  • Support the development of more junior team members by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and building capability.
  • Communicate issues clearly and professionally.
  • Actively listen to others' viewpoints and incorporate them into work delivered.
  • Collaborate to build relationships within the GT practice, the Ethics & Independence team, and the firm's wider Quality & Risk function.
  • Be respectful and mindful of the confidentiality of work.
  • Manage time and priorities efficiently, juggling multiple priorities and flexing workload when re-prioritization is needed.
  • Demonstrate curiosity and professional skepticism, asking questions and challenging appropriately.
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency and/or innovation.

Requirements

  • Proven experience within Ethics and Independence in a professional services firm (e.g., independence or conflict management function, audit quality, professional and technical standards, or similar regulatory role).
  • Knowledge and experience of applying UK Ethics and Independence requirements (FRC Ethical Standard, ICAEW Code of Ethics, IESBA Code of Ethics).
  • Strong judgment skills with the ability to interpret policies, procedures, or regulatory requirements and apply them practically.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to support and review the work of others, providing constructive feedback.
  • Experience in managing a varied workload, prioritizing effectively, and communicating confidently with senior stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in MS Office 365 applications (e.g., Excel, Word).
