About the Role
The Next.js team is seeking an Engineering Team Lead to build and lead a team focused on the open-source framework. This hands-on role requires a balance of technical leadership, direct code contribution, and coaching to help a small team achieve its best work.
Responsibilities
- Build and ship Next.js by writing production code, reviewing pull requests, and debugging issues.
- Lead major technical initiatives from exploration through implementation and production follow-through.
- Set technical direction for rendering, caching, routing, build systems, runtime behavior, and developer tooling.
- Investigate performance regressions, production failures, and developer pain points to drive framework improvements.
- Establish strong patterns for code quality, testing, performance, reliability, observability, and incremental delivery.
- Coach engineers through pairing, design reviews, code reviews, and technical feedback.
- Provide focused people leadership, setting clear expectations, giving candid feedback, and supporting career development.
- Improve team execution through lightweight planning and decision-making practices.
- Partner with Product, Design, Infrastructure, Developer Experience, and other engineering teams.
- Champion open source by working in public and engaging with contributors.
- Help grow the team by participating in recruiting and assessing technical talent.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with continued effectiveness as a hands-on engineer.
- Experience leading engineers or small technical teams (team lead, tech lead, staff engineer, engineering manager, or founder).
- Recent experience writing, reviewing, and shipping production code.
- Strong technical judgment across React, framework architecture, or large-scale open-source systems (rendering, caching, routing, build tooling, runtime behavior).
- Ability to take complex technical problems, form a clear point of view, write critical code, and guide other engineers.
- Comfortable leading from the front or creating space for others to own initiatives.
- Experience building products or infrastructure for developers, understanding their quality, performance, stability, and usability expectations.
- Systems thinking ability to guide a team toward clean abstractions and scalable technical decisions.
- Comfort working through ambiguity and solving problems from first principles.
- Ability to balance speed and quality, favoring incremental delivery while investing in foundational infrastructure.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to facilitate technical debate and make decisions.
- Experience using AI tools in workflow and informed opinions on agentic products for developers.
