About the Role

The Finance Director oversees all financial operations, including managing the monthly close process, financial reporting, annual audits, reimbursements, chapter support, and financial systems maintenance. This role requires a strong understanding of financial strategy, compliance, and accounting policies, with the ability to provide key information on budgeting and forecasting, and to supervise staff and lead teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the annual budget process with senior staff and board members to ensure accurate reporting of budget actuals and timely projections.
  • Provide monthly reports to the Budget and Finance Committee of DSA’s National Political Committee (NPC).
  • Oversee accounting operations, including financial statement preparation, general ledger maintenance, vendor management, and monthly financial close.
  • Develop new metrics and financial systems for understanding organizational financial health, including cash flow forecasting and reserve/liquidity monitoring.
  • Design and maintain internal controls and segregation of duties for cash handling, disbursements, and payment processing.
  • Support staff and volunteers in developing training and resources for chapter treasurers.
  • Evaluate and improve current financial practices and systems for GAAP compliance and efficient reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Development Director to create metrics for tracking membership dues, donations, and fundraising success.
  • Work with the Compliance Officer to address financial inquiries from chapters and national committees and ensure compliance with 501(c)(4) requirements for member payments.
  • Manage DSA’s Grants program, including developing funding opportunities, overseeing payments and reporting, and ensuring compliance with restrictions and Single Audit thresholds.
  • Supervise finance staff, including a Finance Coordinator, Financial Analyst, and Organizing Bookkeeper.
  • Oversee year-end audit activities and serve as the audit liaison, setting work plans and supporting external auditors with tax and CHAR-500 filings.
  • Administer payroll in conjunction with the Operations Director.
  • Supervise cash management at the national office and events.
  • Administer bank accounts and electronic processors (e.g., PayPal, Braintree, Stripe, Auth.net) and manage investment accounts with committee support.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years in finance leadership, primarily within nonprofit, political organizations, or unions, with a demonstrated record of increasing responsibility.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting principles, practices, and net asset classification (restricted vs. unrestricted).
  • Experience with accounting/ERP or related software (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Xero, Bill.com, Concur, or similar) and PEO and/or payroll systems.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing a team, including staff development, retention, and project management of competing workstreams.
  • High level of accountability, responsibility, and dependability.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Track record of designing or maintaining internal controls.
  • Enthusiasm and dedication to process, procedures, and documentation.
  • Commitment to democratic socialist, feminist, anti-racist, anti-ableist, anti-heterosexist and pro-worker action, identifying as a socialist and being grounded in democratic socialist politics.
  • General agreement with the positions and perspectives of YDSA and DSA.
