About the Role

This role owns the journey of every machine in our fleet, from initial setup to full configuration and validation for user deployment. The mission is to achieve a zero-touch process for machine lifecycle management.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the end-to-end machine lifecycle pipeline, covering power-on, network boot, OS installation, configuration, validation, and production handoff.
  • Automate hardware bring-up using out-of-band management (BMC, Redfish, IPMI) for firmware updates, BIOS settings, boot order, and inventory discovery.
  • Automate OS provisioning with network boot (PXE / UEFI HTTP boot) and unattended installation.
  • Write and maintain Ansible and Python code for machine configuration, replacing manual runbooks with versioned code.
  • Apply GitOps and CI/CD principles to the fleet, managing desired state in Git, changes via merge requests, and automated testing and deployment.
  • Build automated validation and burn-in processes, including health checks, stress tests, and acceptance criteria.
  • Model the lifecycle as a state machine with clear, automated transitions and an auditable history.
  • Instrument the pipeline with metrics and logging for lifecycle tracking and process monitoring.
  • Collaborate with HPC and datacenter teams to integrate their operational knowledge into the automation.

Requirements

  • Strong Python skills for building automation, tooling, and services.
  • Hands-on Ansible experience, including writing and reviewing playbooks and roles.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD principles: pipelines, testing, staged rollouts, and version control.
  • Automation-first, GitOps mindset, believing infrastructure state belongs in Git.
  • Working knowledge of Linux, including the boot process, system services, and debugging.
  • Sound engineering judgment for designing safe, retryable workflows with audit trails.
  • Clear communication skills and patience to translate operational knowledge into automation.
  • A smart, curious engineer who learns fast and is excited by automating physical infrastructure.
