About the Role
A family in Murray Hill seeks an experienced, highly organized, and hands-on Family Assistant/Household Manager to maintain an organized, calm, and well-run home. The role focuses on household organization, home upkeep, family support, and ensuring smooth operations, with a warm presence for two independent children during after-school and evening hours.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a beautifully organized, orderly, and welcoming household
- Provide daily upkeep and refresh of the home, with deep cleaning handled by the family's regular cleaner
- Refresh and maintain the principal's personal spaces on a daily basis
- Manage family laundry, including washing, folding, putting away, and maintaining organized laundry systems
- Maintain closets and wardrobes, including ongoing editing, folding, organizing, and seasonal upkeep
- Organize drawers, cabinets, kitchen spaces, pantry areas, and other household storage
- Proactively identify areas of the home that need attention and restore order without waiting to be asked
- Maintain and restock household and pantry supplies
- Receive meal deliveries and manage meal service from start to finish
- Heat, plate, and serve family dinners
- Reset and tidy the kitchen following meals
- Keep the kitchen and pantry organized and well stocked
- Assist with light food preparation
- Run household and personal errands as needed
- Coordinate with household vendors and service providers
- Oversee appointments, deliveries, repairs, and individuals coming into the home
- Help ensure household systems and routines operate smoothly
- Provide a warm and reliable presence for the family's two children, ages 12 and 14
- Check in with the children after school and ensure they have what they need without hovering or providing unnecessary hands-on care
- Help reinforce reasonable household organization and routines with the children
- Provide occasional evening supervision
- Stay overnight with the children on rare occasions when the principal travels, with advance notice
- Assist with basic care and oversight of the family's cat
- Pitch in wherever necessary to support the household and family
Requirements
- Ideally 8–10+ years of experience working in private households
- Previous experience as a Family Assistant, Household Manager, Executive Housekeeper, or in a similarly hands-on private household role
- Exceptional organizational skills and a genuine enjoyment of creating and maintaining organized spaces
- Hands-on mentality and willingness to perform both household management and practical household tasks
- Highly proactive and able to recognize what needs to be done without being directed
- Comfortable with laundry, wardrobe care, household organization, light cleaning, kitchen upkeep, and meal service
- Enjoys cooking and working in the kitchen
- Comfortable working in a home with older, independent children
- Warm and nurturing without approaching the position as a traditional nanny role
- Comfortable with cats and willing to oversee basic pet needs when necessary
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Discreet, trustworthy, reliable, and respectful of family privacy
- Flexible regarding occasional schedule changes, later evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and rare overnights
- Excellent professional references
