About the Role
The Grossing Laboratory Technician I prepares, trims, and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. This role is crucial for ensuring the utmost quality and accuracy in diagnostic procedures.
Responsibilities
- Meet minimum production standards for department
- Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues per SOP and related protocols
- Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code description
- Communicate with and respond to Pathologists, transcription, and Lab Coordinator email communications
- Identify problems and special handling cases
- Trim tissue for specific re-gross requests when requested
- Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of various machines and equipment
- Exercises judgment in evaluating and reporting results
- Report any technical/QC problems to their lead tech or supervisor
- Crosstrain and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab
- Follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures
- Maintains clean and organized work area
- Restocks supplies as needed
- Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation
- Consult with senior peers on non-complex tasks to learn through experience
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Coursework in anatomy / physiology required
- Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments
- Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures
- Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Histology procedures and equipment
- Attention to detail and organized with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Effective communication skills and ability to exchange accurate information
- Proficiency in the English language which allows for participation in team meetings, accurate entry of data into company systems and understanding of written directions
- Positive, can-do attitude
- Utilize personal computer skills, including fast and accurate typing, to input data efficiently
- Stationary Position- must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to 2 hours
- Constantly operates a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently
- Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
- Required to lift, move, and carry up to 40 lbs
- The ability to observe details at close range
- Extended hours may be needed
- Laboratory environments with potential biohazards present that are mitigated by the mandatory use of PPE
- Work under close to moderate supervision
- Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals
