About the Role

Advanced Electric Systems is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Apprentice Fiber Technicians. This role offers hands-on training and the chance to build a career in the fiber optic and electrical infrastructure industry, working on high-voltage transmission infrastructure with OPGW fiber.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and assist with OPGW fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Work primarily with OPGW fiber associated with high-voltage transmission lines.
  • Perform fusion and mechanical splicing of fiber optic cables under the direction of experienced technicians.
  • Operate OTDRs, power meters, VFLs, and other fiber testing equipment.
  • Read and understand fiber schematics, OPGW splicing diagrams, network maps, and construction drawings.
  • Install and maintain OPGW splice enclosures, hardware, patch panels, and other fiber components.
  • Perform fiber testing and document test results.
  • Assist experienced technicians with troubleshooting and identifying fiber faults.
  • Learn proper fiber preparation, splicing, testing, and documentation procedures.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs, splice records, test results, and other project documentation.
  • Work closely with Journeyman Fiber Technicians, project managers, engineers, and field crews.
  • Follow all company safety practices and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Learn and follow proper procedures when working around high-voltage transmission infrastructure.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Travel regularly to project locations throughout the region and/or across North America.
  • Work extended and varying assignments based on project requirements.
  • Stay overnight away from home as required by project location and schedule.

Requirements

  • Willingness to learn the fiber optic trade and develop into a skilled Fiber Technician.
  • No previous fiber experience required; fiber optic or OPGW experience is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to work with tools and equipment.
  • Ability to learn and follow technical instructions and procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly for work, including overnight and extended project assignments.
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work safely around high-voltage transmission infrastructure.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn.
  • Commitment to safety and following company procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Previous fiber optic, telecommunications, electrical, construction, or utility experience is preferred.
  • Previous experience with OPGW fiber is preferred.
  • Experience using hand tools and power tools is preferred.
  • OSHA 10 certification is preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is preferred.
  • CDL or willingness to obtain one is preferred.
  • Experience working outdoors or on construction crews is preferred.
  • Familiarity with iPads, tablets, GIS tools, or digital job tracking platforms is preferred.
