About the Role

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) works as part of the Supportive Crisis Stabilization Center (SCSC) program to support clients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD), Mental Health (MH), or co-occurring diagnoses. The PSS is a vital member of the crisis response team, providing direct advocacy and support to clients throughout their engagement with services, including admission, treatment, and discharge planning.

Responsibilities

Greet clients and provide support during triage, screening, and assessment.
Support SCSC clients during times of crisis.
Act as an advocate for clients' treatment services.
Educate clients on their rights and responsibilities.
Teach coping skills to individuals and family members.
Utilize a person-centered approach.
Support a holistic approach and multiple pathways to recovery, including self-help resources.
Serve as a role model to clients.
Educate through shared experiences.
Establish appropriate and respectful peer relationships.
Mentor clients in areas supporting recovery, such as communication, self-care, self-advocacy, and conflict resolution.
Lead educational and support groups for clients.
Participate in the treatment team model, including informing treatment planning.
Adhere to all defined role responsibilities and ethics as outlined by the respective Certification Board for Peer Specialist or Advocate.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older.
High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Must identify as being actively in recovery from a SUD or MH condition and self-disclose one's recovery journey.
Must have a certification or attain provisional certification within 90 days of employment as a Peer Specialist or Advocate recognized by the Office of Mental Health (OMH) and/or Office of Addiction Supports and Services (OASAS).
For individuals not yet certified at hire, must identify as actively in recovery for at least one year from a SUD or MH condition, self-disclose their recovery journey, and submit three letters of reference to the NYS Certification Board to support their application for Certified Peer Specialist or Advocate.
Must attest to the respective Certification Board Code of Ethical Conduct for Peer Specialists or Advocate.
Previous experience preferred working with individuals with complex substance use and mental health needs.
Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License as travel is required.
