About the Role

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan dedicated to expanding opportunities for individuals, families, and communities through education, career, and supportive services. The Student Advisor supports attendance improvement, develops relationships with students and families, and coordinates resources to address key priorities such as attendance, academic, and socio-emotional well-being.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary advisor for an assigned cohort of students.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one sessions with students at least twice a month.
  • Support students in creating and implementing SMART goals.
  • Partner with students, families, school staff, and Community School teams to develop individualized student plans.
  • Conduct and support student advisory groups in collaboration with school faculty.
  • Provide progress updates on students to leadership and key school staff.
  • Participate in weekly case conferencing with school and CS staff.
  • Provide crisis intervention and counseling for students under supervision.
  • Conduct attendance outreach via phone calls, texts, letters, remote communication, and home visits.
  • Organize and implement special activities and events to meet the recreational, cultural, and social needs of the school community.
  • Support the new student admission process, including outreach, intake interviews, and orientations.
  • Partner with students to identify opportunities and referrals based on their needs and aspirations.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to create best practices for cohort management and support services.
  • Build strong relationships with families to provide support, resources, and opportunities for growth.
  • Implement family engagement structures, including parent workshops and volunteer opportunities.
  • Connect families to community resources and ESH's internal Social Services Department.
  • Collaborate in the successful management of the program with the Program Director, NYCDOE Staff, and the school community.
  • Lead and/or champion school events to build community, pride, and a welcoming environment.
  • Prepare and present workshops for student development in leadership, life skills, and self-efficacy.
  • Collaborate with leadership to design tools and strategies for tracking and meeting program goals.
  • Strategize with the team for program improvement.
  • Attend and participate in various meetings, including in-school, community-based, administrative, and professional development sessions.
  • Complete tasks and projects assigned by the Program Director.

Requirements

  • Must be able to fulfill all elements of the job description to the highest standard.
  • Must be able to work well with colleagues in a high-energy and collaborative work environment.
  • Employees must be cleared to work at ESH.
  • Must complete Department of Education (DOE) fingerprinting.
  • Must complete a background check.
  • Some nights and weekends required.

Skills

  • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with school-aged youth, educators, families, and communities from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of community organizing, student support services, and youth development theories.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with strong relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in WordPerfect/Microsoft Word and other applications.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Sufficient technology skills including the ability to learn new software and programs, complete digital paperwork, communicate effectively via email, and a willingness to learn new skills/complete basic troubleshooting.
