About the Role
The Optician will provide quality optical care and outstanding customer service to a diverse patient base, including pediatric, adolescent, and adult customers. This role involves assisting patients with eyeglass orders and fittings, and utilizing strong sales skills to recommend products and enhancements.
Responsibilities
- Interpret prescriptions written by ophthalmologists and optometrists.
- Communicate with physicians regarding prescription questions or concerns.
- Inspect lenses for flaws, verify prescriptions, progressive measurements, lens enhancements, and coatings.
- Measure bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers.
- Mount and secure lenses for cutting, polishing, and grinding.
- Assist in selecting frames based on style, color, facial measurements, and prescriptions.
- Recommend specific lenses, lens coatings, enhancements, and frames to suit patient needs.
- Recommend appropriate contact lenses based on prescription and lifestyle.
- Verify finished lenses are ground to specifications.
- Create work orders for lab technicians.
- Set up machines to polish, bevel, edge, or grind lenses.
- Heat, shape, or bend frames to adjust eyeglasses for proper fit.
- Shape lenses for insertion into frames.
- Repair broken or damaged frames.
- Educate patients on proper wear and care of eyeglasses and contact lenses.
- Determine clients' current lens prescriptions using lensometers or lens analyzers.
- Sell and dispense contact lenses under supervision.
- Place contact lens orders with appropriate vendors.
- Instruct patients on proper insertion, removal, and care for contact lenses.
- Verify contact lens fitting information using specialized equipment.
- Troubleshoot patient RX issues and act as a liaison between patient and physician.
- Maintain contact lens trial inventory.
- Document, track, and follow up on patient orders.
- Arrange and maintain displays of optical merchandise.
- Attend training workshops and meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- ABO Certified.
- Minimum 2 years of eyecare experience required.
- Minimum Associates degree or equivalent and on-the-job training or post-secondary education.
- Ability to demonstrate eye-hand coordination, manual/finger dexterity, agility, color vision, and depth perception with visual acuity correctable to 20/25.
- Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Team player with strong collaborative working relationships and ability to build consensus.
- Strong computer knowledge and skills with a minimum typing speed of 30 AW PM.
