About the Role
The pharmacy buyer/technician is responsible for the selection, procurement, and distribution of pharmaceuticals with the advice and direction of SJH pharmacists.
Responsibilities
- Determines items to be ordered based on pre-established pars or utilization.
- Serves as a liaison between wholesaler, vendors, GPO, and the department.
- Places orders daily directly to the wholesaler or secondary means if the website is inaccessible.
- Places orders directly to vendors for items available by direct order only.
- Enters all purchase order information into the SJH MM computer module.
- Receives and verifies all items ordered against items received, except controlled drugs.
- Receives and restocks inventory upon receipt of orders from the supplier, except controlled drugs.
- Signs and codes all POs and invoices, and sends them to accounts payable.
- Maintains relationships with "short supply" vendors.
- Maintains the pharmacy drug dictionary by updating NDC numbers and defining alternate numbers.
- Verifies that all received items can be scanned.
- Ensures uninterrupted supply and distribution of medications during computer downtime.
- Participates in annual inventory.
- Orders supplies from in-house sources.
- Generates computer refill lists for non-Pyxis stocked items and IV items.
- Fills medications from computer-generated labels.
- Runs Pyxis reports to charge patients and replace stock.
- Fills stock requisitions and charges the appropriate unit.
- Assures adequate inventory levels by writing needed items on the reorder sheet.
- Makes regular rounds to nursing units to pick up orders and deliver medications.
- Delivers items to the loading dock for distribution to off-site locations.
- May travel to off-site locations to maintain Pyxis and perform stock functions.
- Answers the telephone, identifies self and department, and relays information.
- Maintains the department in a clean and orderly manner.
- Performs pharmacy and nursing unit inspections for outdated medications.
- Organizes outdated or overstock medication for return or destruction.
- Responsible for returned PCA and epidural pump disinfection.
- Repacks bulk medications into unit doses, calculating expiration dates.
- Performs aseptic manipulation of sterile products under pharmacist supervision.
- Functions during various "code" situations.
Requirements
- High School graduate with computer skills.
- Previous pharmacy technician and buyer experience preferred.
- Must be able to lift and carry at least 20 pounds.
- Must possess attention to detail and easily distinguish between similar drug names.
- Must be able to remain calm and function in stressful situations.
