About the Role
The Principal Scientist will be responsible for the technological aspects of projects, focusing on improving existing products or creating new ones within a specific product group or business channel. This role involves organizing and implementing trials from conceptualization to completion to achieve project team goals.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical knowledge to enhance product quality, yields, and production processes.
- Propose ideas for new product development.
- Organize and interpret pilot plant or plant trials, assisting with process development.
- Write detailed reports with conclusions and recommendations.
- Collaborate with plant and engineering on feasibility studies for new and improved products.
- Liaise with other departments including Marketing, Purchasing, Packaging, Manufacturing, QA, and Legal.
- Continuously evaluate and improve all aspects of production, including raw materials, techniques, specifications, and shelf life.
- Participate in Quality Assurance activities such as HACCP analysis, GMP, labeling, and standards of identity.
- Coordinate support activities and maintain technical records.
- Ensure the confidentiality of company processes and information.
- Conduct patent searches and document findings.
- Develop and maintain contacts within the R&D company network, including international teams.
- Foster industry and academic contacts to stay current with technical developments.
- Act as a Research & Development Technician for routine pilot plant activities.
Requirements
- Strong Cheese process knowledge.
- Strong Food Technology knowledge (Microbiology / Physics / Biochemistry / Process).
- Strong Mathematics knowledge including statistics.
- Strong Communication skills for interdepartmental and technician interactions.
- Proficient Computer skills with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for reporting and presentations.
- Master’s degree (M.S.) or equivalent in Dairy or Food Science.
- Minimum five to ten years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to perform regular sitting, hand use, reaching, talking, and hearing.
- Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities including close vision and ability to adjust focus.
- Willingness to travel up to 30% for plant trials, training, focus groups, and supplier visits.
