About the Role

This role offers a unique opportunity for an experienced tax professional seeking increased leadership responsibility and a potential path to partnership. You will play a leadership role within Segal's growing Tax Practice, delivering sophisticated tax planning and compliance services, serving as a trusted advisor to owner-managed businesses and high-net-worth individuals, mentoring future leaders, and contributing to the strategic growth of the practice.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex tax planning engagements for private corporations, business owners, high-net-worth individuals, trusts and estates.
  • Develop and implement tax-efficient structures related to corporate reorganizations, estate freezes, succession planning, acquisitions, divestitures, and wealth preservation strategies.
  • Prepare and review sophisticated tax planning memoranda, technical analysis, and client recommendations.
  • Advise clients on Canadian income tax matters and identify proactive planning opportunities to minimize risk and maximize value.
  • Serve as the primary tax advisor and relationship manager for a portfolio of key clients.
  • Review corporate, personal, trust and partnership tax returns.
  • Research and resolve complex tax issues and provide technical guidance to engagement teams.
  • Monitor tax legislation and regulatory developments, assess client implications, and communicate changes internally and externally.
  • Lead technical consultations involving complex and high-risk tax matters.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and mentorship to Managers, Senior Accountants, Tax Staff, and CPA students.
  • Delegate work effectively, review deliverables, and support the professional growth of team members.
  • Participate in performance management, career development and succession planning initiatives.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment focused on excellence and continuous learning.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the Tax Practice's strategic goals and growth initiatives.
  • Assist in resource planning, workflow management, and capacity planning to ensure efficient client service delivery.
  • Establish and maintain best practices, quality standards, and process improvements within the tax department.
  • Collaborate with Assurance, Advisory and Family Office teams to deliver integrated client solutions.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with clients, referral sources, and professional advisors.
  • Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and cross-sell firm services.
  • Participate in proposals, presentations, networking events, and business development initiatives.
  • Support Partners in pursuing new client opportunities and strategic growth objectives.
  • Develop and deliver tax presentations, seminars, and educational sessions for clients and team members.
  • Contribute to tax alerts, technical articles, webinars and other thought leadership initiatives.
  • Build and maintain a strong professional profile within the tax and business community.

Requirements

  • A CPA designation is required.
  • Completion of the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program and/or Master of Taxation (MTax).
  • Minimum 8-10 years of progressive public accounting tax experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in tax planning for private companies, entrepreneurs, owner-managed businesses, and high-net-worth individuals.
  • Significant experience with corporate reorganizations, estate and succession planning, and trust taxation.
  • Proven ability to manage complex engagements and multiple client relationships simultaneously.
  • Experience mentoring and developing professional staff.
  • Demonstrated involvement in business development and client relationship management.
