About the Role

The Youth Care Professional (YCP) works with a residential treatment team to create a therapeutic, nurturing, structured, and protective environment. This role assists youth in developing life and social skills, ensuring their physical and emotional needs are met daily, and upholding the agency's mission and principles.

Responsibilities

• Exercise full compliance with Agency code of conduct, policies, procedures, and Federal and State laws.
• Maintain confidentiality and security for client/staff materials and records.
• Exercise full compliance with the Justice Center’s Code of Conduct for Custodians of People with Special Needs.
• Provide individual and group supervision and account for all youth in care at all times.
• Obtain and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification and utilize approved crisis prevention/intervention techniques.
• Document all incidents and participate in supervisory reviews with TCI Post Crisis Response.
• Support the effective use of clients’ Individual Crisis Support Plans (ICSPs).
• Supervise medications as prescribed, report medical problems, and follow medical directions.
• Uphold all rules and structure within the residence.
• Facilitate at least one fire drill per year.
• Provide a safe environment for youth and staff utilizing the Sanctuary model.
• Observe and promptly report unsafe work conditions and/or employee work habits.
• Set a good safety example for the department and agency.
• Check and report repair and maintenance needs to maintain the physical condition of the group home/cottage.
• Complete all necessary notifications following all incidents and document appropriately before the end of shift.
• Safely manage the environment and coordinate staff, youth, families, and community resources as needed.
• Comply with all program and agency policies/procedures.
• Attend required trainings, including ongoing training and staff development.
• Develop nurturing relationships with each client to promote healthy growth and development.
• Actively support and carry out Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports and Trauma Systems Therapy models.
• Support youth in attending school and provide homework support as needed.
• Demonstrate, promote, and practice cultural competency towards clients, families, and staff.
• Utilize relationships to help clients cope more effectively.
• Utilize the Functional Behavioral Approach to address youth’s behavior by understanding unmet needs and implementing alternative options.
• Understand and utilize policies when purchasing clothing, food, and other supplies for the residence.
• Complete service delivery documentation within required timeframes in the ECR.
• Follow up with Program Manager & Clinician if any concerns arise.
• Maintain daily shift notes in the ECR for each youth.
• Maintain daily logs for each resident, general log, and milk usage; chart meals served.
• Support youth in the daily routine of the residence.
• Implement treatment methods and directives of each individual client as prescribed in the Treatment Plan.
• Provide therapeutic consequences (limit setting) that are fair, consistent, and recognize the needs of the youth.
• Set behavioral limits for youth within the program and out in the community.
• Provide input to the ICSP’s of the youth.
• Assist youth in Independent Living Skills.
• Facilitate Community Meetings with the youth and staff.
• Prepare and assist youth in meal preparations and/or serving in accordance with the established menu.
• Lead and participate in recreation and leisure time activities.
• Transport clients to home visits, community activities, and medical appointments as needed.
• Collaborate with the team to create opportunities for families and natural supports to visit the Group Home.
• Attend and participate in the treatment team process; write assessments, assist in the development of treatment objectives and methods.
• Perform other duties requiring comparable skills utilizing the Sanctuary Model Guiding Principles and Seven Commitments.
• Participate in the cleaning/upkeep of the group home; report repairs to Program Manager.
• Uphold established policies and procedures and make suggestions for improvement.
• Perform other responsibilities as designated by program leadership.

Requirements

• H.S Diploma or equivalent required.
• Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.
• Must be able to perform a variety of household tasks, climb stairs, move throughout the group home, work cooperatively in a team environment and quickly respond to emergencies.
• Must successfully complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training, which includes a written test and LSI demonstration.
• Staff must successfully complete all required TCI refreshers to maintain continued employment.
• Must successfully complete and maintain TCI Associate Level Certification either at time of, or within the first year of employment.
• Ability to drop repeatedly to knees, twist and turn, exert oneself physically at an intense level, and support another adult’s weight during TCI training.
• Must transport clients utilizing an agency vehicle.

Skills

• Valid NYS Driver’s license in good standing
• CPR certification required for some programs
• Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification
