About the Role
AmeriCorps*Texas Volunteers are sought to serve as College Access/Success Coaches, empowering youth and fostering a passion for higher education. This role involves strategic planning, goal monitoring, and achieving organizational objectives.
Responsibilities
- Teach college preparatory classes for 40 or more underserved high school students.
- Host occasional student workshops outside of regular school hours.
- Ensure students receive high-quality services and meet program goals.
- Gain and maintain knowledge of students' interests, needs, and backgrounds.
- Perform follow-up parent/student phone calls.
- Collect, organize, and maintain student and program documents.
- Implement strategies to engage prospective students through presentations and events.
- Organize and conduct student recruitment efforts, including interviewing prospective students.
- Update the database and spreadsheet files weekly; maintain student records and statistics.
- Provide mid-year and end-of-year progress reports for all students.
- Conduct research on higher education norms and trends in Texas.
- Grade and provide feedback on classroom assignments, including ACT/SAT diagnostic tests.
- Chaperone students on events such as college visits and the Summer Tour of Colleges.
- Coordinate with the College Success Team to provide college transition services.
- Submit weekly timesheets, periodic reports, and other required documentation.
- Attend required programmatic and community service events.
- Serve on project teams for program events, student communications, financial aid, recruitment, parent services, curriculum revision, and community service.
- Adhere to program and organizational calendars for task completion.
- Coordinate with the supervisor to order, maintain, and inventory program supplies.
- Maintain excellent working relationships with supervisors, fellow AmeriCorps Volunteers, school personnel, students, families, volunteers, donors, and the community.
Requirements
- Must possess a sincere interest in empowering youth and a passion for higher education.
- Ability to carefully and strategically plan individual work goals.
- Ability to closely monitor progress towards goals and take appropriate remedial action.
- Must be leaders with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Must serve a minimum of 1200 hours of service.
- Must complete a full contractual term of 10 months.
- Mandatory in-person AmeriCorps training required.
- Must submit to and pass a comprehensive criminal background check.
- Must have mobility throughout the office and frequently drive or ride up to 30 miles to service locations.
- May infrequently be required to drive or ride distances of up to 250 miles, with occasional air travel necessary.
- Must be emotionally mature and able to handle difficult situations.
- Must demonstrate an ability to solve practical problems and deal with changing variables.
- Must demonstrate strong interpersonal and coaching skills.
- Excellent writing and communication skills are essential.
- Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret educational and business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Must exhibit an ability to professionally write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Must be able to interpret a variety of instructions.
- Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions.
- Must demonstrate the ability to understand and apply standard, high school-level mathematical concepts.
