About the Role
Allen Matkins is seeking a senior-level marketing and business development professional to oversee its marketing, business development, branding and communications programs. The Chief Business Development & Marketing Officer (CBDMO) will serve as a strategic advisor and leader with a close eye on metrics, accountability and quality control. The ideal candidate will foster an environment of teamwork, collaboration and transparency and will serve as an advocate for the marketing team and the Firm’s brand across all departments and within the Partnership.
Responsibilities
- Define a brand strategy for the Firm that builds on its current strengths and supports growth in line with the Firm’s vision and goals; communicate the strategy internally to ensure buy-in and support from the Firm’s stakeholders.
- Ensure that the Firm’s digital presence is aligned with and supporting the brand strategy, collaborating with the team to ensure ongoing evaluation and improvement of brand effectiveness.
- Measure effectiveness and ROI of the team’s activities against the Firm’s strategy; establish metrics to gauge the department’s contribution to the Firm’s bottom line and constantly improve the effectiveness of key initiatives.
- Obtain, manage and review market, industry, competitive and client research to develop ongoing, in-depth knowledge of the Firm’s practice groups, sectors and markets, including attorney expertise, Firm experience, industry/trade group organizations, trends and clients.
- Oversee the development and delivery of tailored value propositions, marketing messages, programming, collateral support and tools to translate the Firm’s solutions into effective communications that support brand growth and new business development programs.
- Work with Firm management to recommend and manage the annual marketing budget.
- Develop and implement a content strategy to support the brand strategy and includes and integrates advertising, e-marketing, website, collateral materials, media relations, social media, sponsorships, events and similar activities, elevating some activities into broader campaigns to meet specific goals and address key targets.
- Collaborate with the Firm’s Talent team on the implementation of a robust alumni program for past employees of Allen Matkins that builds trusted relationships between alumni and current and future/prospective clients.
- Support the Firm’s Talent team to prepare and produce recruiting collateral/assets that share the same brand perspective and are consistent with the Firm’s brand standards.
- Ensure that the Firm effectively employs technology and related processes to collect, warehouse, and utilize information on clients, prospective clients, referral sources, alumni, competitors, lawyer bios, past pitches, collateral materials and the Firm’s matters such that marketing efforts can be tracked and measured and in support of branding and business development planning and implementation.
- Oversee participation in surveys/awards/directories to ensure the Firm is appropriately recognized for its achievements and strengths.
- Support, with the Talent team, the Firm’s diversity and inclusion efforts, including both internal and external events and programming.
- Develop and support programs designed to ensure that the Firm continually enhances its commitment to and relationships with clients, including key client and client feedback programs.
- Establish strategic and creative best practice guidelines for the pitching process including developing a RFP priority policy, competitive intelligence gathering, audience analysis, client/project need analysis, perception analysis and key message development.
- Evaluate, analyze, interpret, organize and supervise the flow and completion of RFP’s, RFI’s and RFQ’s and ensure best practices are used across the Firm; rehearse with and coach pitch teams on presentation techniques; implement metrics to evaluate effectiveness and ensure continuous improvement of the process and outcomes.
- Identify business development training needs and implement appropriate curriculum for lawyers, support staff, and marketing staff in collaboration with the Talent team, including facilitating or conducting in-house marketing training programs as well as assessing outside training resources.
- Support practice groups, client teams, markets, and individual Partner’s efforts to increase revenues from new and existing clients, including the creation, tracking and follow-up of initiatives.
- Create a center of marketing excellence within the Firm, setting group priorities, service level expectations, quality control measures and internal client feedback mechanisms.
- Elevate the team’s ability to deliver and exceed expectations by organizing, training, evaluating, and inspiring the Firm’s marketing and business development professionals to achieve a high-performance, collaborative culture.
- Clearly articulate the team’s value proposition and revenue generation contribution across the Firm.
- Work with the Firm’s Management Committee on new iterations of the Firm’s Strategic Plan.
- Act as trusted advisor to Firm Partners, Office Operating Partners, and Practice Group Leaders and members of the Management Committee to implement the Firm’s Strategic Plan across the Firm’s offices and practices.
- Work with the Firm’s leadership to collaboratively meet the Firm’s goals.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 20 years of related professional experience is required; five years in progressive marketing roles at the senior management level in a professional services firm, or equivalent; advanced degree preferred.
- Ability to clearly articulate a vision and strategy in a way that inspires and motivates a team and focuses their energy on achieving business goals.
- Experience successfully recruiting, leading, and managing a high-performing team of professionals.
- Deep understanding of the professional services industry and business environment.
- Accomplished in seeing the big picture while having a sharp eye on the details that make up the greater whole.
- Demonstrate superior communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate concepts, along with their corresponding solutions, in a clear and inspiring manner that will engage and persuade stakeholders of all levels including clients, Partners and other internal and external constituents.
- Exude a goal-oriented, flexible and creative mindset under pressure along with the organizational skills to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal skills that lead to relationships of trust and effective collaboration.
- A high level of comfort with marketing technology concepts and proven ability to interact with IT in a collaborative way to effect change.
- Possess a natural curiosity that will lend itself to keeping the Firm at the forefront of “what’s next” in the marketplace and in front of the competition.
