About the Role
Join an exciting team of actuaries and software engineers modernizing the tools that support insurance pricing. By replacing complex spreadsheet-based workflows with robust applications, we help make actuarial processes more reliable, transparent, and efficient. We are looking for a software developer who enjoys building well-designed applications and takes ownership of delivering maintainable solutions.
Responsibilities
- Develop new features and capabilities for actuarial applications built with R Shiny.
- Design and enhance user interfaces using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to deliver intuitive, responsive user experiences.
- Develop shared JavaScript components to improve maintainability and accelerate feature development.
- Refactor R code to leverage reusable JavaScript components where appropriate.
- Work closely with actuaries and other stakeholders to understand business challenges, refine requirements, and translate ideas into practical solutions.
- Build and maintain automated test suites of UI components.
- Adhere to software engineering best practices, including code reviews, testing, documentation, and continuous improvement.
- Help shape the technical direction of a growing suite of actuarial applications.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering.
- Education or equivalent experience in a quantitative discipline such as actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, data science, or a related field.
- Strong JavaScript, HTML, and CSS skills.
- Experience structuring UI codebases for maintainability.
- Ability to independently design and implement user interfaces.
- Experience with R or other analytical programming languages (e.g., Python, SAS), with R experience strongly preferred and a willingness to learn R.
- Solid software engineering fundamentals (version control, testing, code review, effort estimation, and the ability to quickly learn new languages, frameworks, and technologies).
- Experience customizing R Shiny components using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
- Experience using agentic development tools to improve, refactor, or generate code.
