About the Role
The Special Education Teacher contributes to the mission of the Center and the Education Division by developing, implementing, and evaluating individual education and family service plans for assigned students. This role provides leadership to the interdisciplinary team and supervises classroom education staff, collaborating with external stakeholders to meet student needs.
Responsibilities
- Developing students’ Individualized Education Plans
- Developing and implementing lesson plans incorporating goals/objectives from all disciplines of each student's IEP
- Implementing and monitoring behavior and classroom management plans/techniques when necessary
- Developing and adhering to an established daily schedule making daily modifications/adjustments as required
- Maintaining communication with classroom team, parents and program directors regarding students' performance
- Developing lesson plans incorporating the IEP goals and objectives for each student
- Reinforcing appropriate student behavior by utilizing progressive discipline techniques
- Establishing, communicating and monitoring clear expectations for both students and classroom staff
Requirements
- Initial NYS Certification in Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6 or Special Education Permanent
- Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education required
- Individual without a Master’s degree must demonstrate plans to obtain a Master’s degree within a five-year timeframe
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds independently
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree may be hired initially, as New York State allows individuals with an Initial Certification to teach while completing their Master’s degree within a five-year timeframe
