About the Role

The Electrical Designer is a key member of the project team, providing design and project management support. This role involves creating schematics and layouts, performing project functions like surveys and calculations, and utilizing company standards and tools to deliver project requirements. The Designer will also assist in construction administration, including reviewing shop drawings and conducting field observations, and is capable of fulfilling the Job Captain role.

Responsibilities

  • Create trade-specific schematics and layouts based on design principles.
  • Perform project functions including surveys, calculations, selections, and layouts.
  • Assist with all project phases.
  • Effectively communicate with peers, supervisors, vendors, consultants, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Assist in the construction administration process.
  • Process and review shop drawings.
  • Perform field observations and prepare respective reports.
  • Assume the Job Captain function.
  • Perform layouts of power & lighting systems designs with minimal guidance.
  • Perform equipment load calculations with minimal guidance.
  • Perform voltage drop calculations.
  • Select basic electrical distribution equipment with minimal guidance.
  • Coordinate with space conditions and other trades regarding system characteristics.
  • Assist in the development of intricate electrical room and system designs/layouts under closer supervision.
  • Review shop drawings based on project specifications under supervision.
  • Perform building energy comcheck lighting calculations.
  • Enter utility service requests based on project load calculations with supervision.
  • Educate L1 engineers.
  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of project management fundamentals and techniques.
  • Execute project tasks and deliverables using company tools and applications.
  • Consistently execute drawing set-ups, design standards, filing standards, issue sheets, project phasing, and archiving standards.
  • Build relationships and leverage expertise to solve problems and gain knowledge.
  • Take ownership of the coordination of project deliverables and issuances.
  • Coordinate between the project team and other MGE groups for timely and accurate project documentation.
  • Quarterback projects from start to finish, ensuring correct issuance.
  • Include the right stakeholders in communication.
  • Coordinate with all departments and own the process throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Check project documentation for completeness and accuracy prior to submission.
  • Submit completed checklists to the Project Manager.
  • Provide final clearance on project issuance.
  • Escalate concerns quickly and decisively.
  • Ensure checklists, issue sheets, and other pertinent documentation are accurately completed.
  • Ensure all 'pencils are down' before submitting a set for issuance.
  • Own the quality control process, ensuring engineers have checked their designs.
  • Check drawings for accuracy before issuance.
  • Ensure backgrounds and xrefs are up to date.
  • Coordinate the issuance of Project Manuals (Book Specifications) if applicable.
  • Coordinate and check the Issued Drawings List for every drawing issuance.
  • Verify correctness of backgrounds received from architects.
  • Ensure proper drawings are compiled and issued.
  • Communicate the status of issuance through completion.
  • Follow up with the client to ensure package receipt.
  • Ensure proper project documentation is thoroughly, correctly, and consistently followed.
  • Ensure correct drawing set-up and filing.
  • Ensure correct folder structure set-up and ongoing maintenance.
  • Ensure correct and timely issue sheets.
  • Ensure correct post-project filing and archiving.
  • Ensure all changes are bubbled appropriately.
  • Ensure delta in revisions matches delta in the title block.
  • Ensure applicable DOB notes are turned on for DOB filing and NY-related notes are turned off for out-of-state jobs.
  • Ensure the PAA sub-number is correct.
  • Ensure initials of team members are on title blocks for all drawings.
  • Include the correct DOB Now number.
  • Communicate project set-up expectations clearly to the CAD/BIM group.
  • Adhere to the company standard project folder structure.
  • Check if drawings, folders, and issue sheets have been set up correctly.
  • Properly place project files into the correct folders.
  • Notify Operations and Office Management that a project is confirmed for archiving.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in a Junior Designer Role as part of a professional engineering project team, under the direct or indirect supervision of a licensed professional engineer.
  • 4-year Engineering degree.
  • Professional Engineering License preferred.
  • Great interpersonal skills.
  • Polished communication skills (both verbal & writing).
  • Highly organized and composed under pressure.
  • Proven time management ability: able to manage strict timelines with multiple projects to meet deadlines under high-pressure environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD & REVIT.
  • Possesses keen eye for detail.
  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of the application of the fundamentals of Project Management.
  • Understands advanced Project Management techniques.
  • Instrumental in the execution of project tasks.
  • Thoroughly understands the company project lifecycle, company design and filing standards, and has a track record of demonstrated excellence in the ability to use the company’s tools and applications to execute project deliverables.
