About the Role
This Master's thesis focuses on developing and testing a position-based bottom-up model for calculating the investment costs of energetic envelope renovations for typical residential and non-residential buildings. The research aims to provide a more transparent and comprehensible estimation of renovation costs for building owners, municipalities, energy suppliers, and other stakeholders, addressing the limitations of generic cost functions by incorporating building-specific cost drivers.
Responsibilities
- Develop and test a position-based bottom-up model for calculating investment costs of energetic envelope renovations.
- Characterize typical buildings and create basic geometric models using CAD or BIM software.
- Determine cost-relevant quantities such as areas, lengths, and item counts for renovation measures.
- Formulate renovation variants and measure packages by technically describing complete options.
- Perform position-based cost calculations by linking quantities with construction services and unit prices.
- Differentiate cost components, including full costs, repair/ancillary costs, and energy-related additional costs.
- Conduct systematic comparisons and sensitivity analyses against generic cost functions and published cost ranges.
- Validate the methodology with a pilot building before applying it to further typical buildings.
Requirements
- Master's thesis topic.
- Focus on energetic envelope renovations for typical residential and non-residential buildings.
- Consideration of measures for facades, windows, roofs, and basement ceilings.
- Inclusion of repair variants, standard energetic variants, and ambitious energetic variants.
- Analysis of at least one historic or heritage-listed building type.
- Comparison with generic cost functions from the Institute for Housing and the Environment (IWU) and published cost ranges.
- Use of CAD or BIM software (e.g., Archicad) for building modeling.
- Experience with position-based cost planning software (e.g., BKI Cost Planner) is beneficial.
