About the Role

The Engineer provides a wide range of engineering support services to ensure the technical soundness, reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the utility and its Electrical Distribution Power System. The role involves accountability for engineering work, strategic project completion, and participation in the annual planning process.

Responsibilities

• Prepares engineering, technical, or business reports and studies; performs options analysis, testing, and evaluations.
• Leads initiatives in short- and long-range strategic planning, including intelligent grid and annual portfolio planning.
• Owns and leads capital portfolio business case development and approvals.
• Makes independent decisions in response to operational needs such as system contingencies, customer connections, and major external projects.
• Provides timely technical support and consultation, demonstrating effective project management and process efficiencies.
• Reviews, develops, and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures, and practices.
• Accountable for the timely, technically accurate, and cost-effective application of engineering practices.
• Compares alternatives based on cost/benefit, system needs, customer needs, safety, statistical analysis, and engineering principles, recommending optimal solutions.
• Undertakes special investigations and studies, preparing reports with recommendations.
• Prepares material and/or technical specifications and standards.
• Reviews proposals from suppliers, contractors, and consultants for technical merit and compliance.
• Investigates and evaluates the application of new technologies.
• Participates in implementing corporate goals.
• Represents Toronto Hydro in external meetings and/or committees.
• May act as a team or project leader.
• Performs root cause analyses of failure data.
• Performs trend analyses of equipment data and determines actions to improve and optimize capital and operations programs.

Requirements

• University degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of Ontario.
• 4+ years of experience with a focus on distribution system analysis, capital project creation and justification.
• Understanding of field inspections and accurate project estimation based on field conditions.
• Experience in CYME is an asset.
• Fluent in enterprise tools for planning and project estimation (e.g., GEAR, SAP).
• Experience with data analysis and project reporting is an asset.
• Masters in Electrical Engineering is an asset.
• Experience in leading strategic projects end-to-end is an asset.
• Valid Class “G” Driver’s License recommended.
• Project Management experience with good knowledge of planning processes is an asset.
• Aptitude and experience in adapting to, managing, and facilitating change demonstrated through self-motivation and stakeholder engagement.
• Self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence, and can visualize possibilities and opportunities.
• Internal and external customer focused with strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to predict and understand technological trends and their effect on business or strategic work plans.
• Demonstrated knowledge of relevant safety and environmental legislation and regulations.
• Demonstrates commitment to environment, health, and safety.
• Experience in data management.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate relationship building.
• Effective skills in project management operations, budgeting, business process, and productivity improvements.
