About the Role

Administers standardized respiratory therapy services to patients in a hospital, nursing home, or health-related facility, adhering to New York State Educational Law for Respiratory Therapists.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up, positions, and operates various types of oxygen, therapeutic gas, and mist-inhalation equipment.
  • Explains treatment and breathing procedures to patients to alleviate fears and anxieties.
  • Prepares and positions patients for therapy, fitting masks or securing cannulae/catheters.
  • Prepares medications as prescribed and adds them to equipment, adjusting settings for optimal delivery.
  • Operates intermittent positive pressure breathing apparatus for gas and drug delivery.
  • Observes patients during therapy and reports any adverse reactions to superiors.
  • Visits patients to ensure physician's orders are followed and equipment is functioning correctly.
  • Disassembles, cleans, sterilizes, and inspects equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Maintains adequate supplies of gases and inventories respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Prepares various records and reports.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid license and current registration (or valid temporary permit) issued by the New York State Education Department as a Respiratory Therapist.

Skills

  • Knowledge of current methods, equipment, applications, and limitations of respiratory therapy.
  • Knowledge of safety standards for resuscitation equipment, oxygen, aerosol medication, and other respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Knowledge of the respiratory system, its normal functions, and common malfunctions.
  • Knowledge of the physiological effects of various respiratory therapy gases and gaseous mixtures on the human body.
  • Ability to communicate calmly and reassuringly with people under stress.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Good motor and eye coordination.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
