About the Role

Proofpoint's Archiving Ingestion team is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to serve as the technical lead for ingestion and data engineering across the Digital Communications Governance (DCG) product line. This high-leverage role involves defining how data enters the platform, focusing on cost, reliability, and guarantees. Architectural decisions made will shape the platform for years to come, especially as new data types are integrated.

Responsibilities

  • Architectural direction of the ingestion platform, including Kafka topology, EKS deployment model, and feature/API design.
  • Drive the roadmap to a scalable, robust ingestion platform.
  • Establish engineering standards for the team, including code quality, observability, and incident response.
  • Define and own ingestion SLOs for throughput, latency, and data quality, and build observability stacks to track them.
  • Lead the incident response model for ingestion, including RCAs, failure mode mitigations, and systemic fixes.
  • Implement cost-aware platform improvements to reduce cloud cost-to-serve while maintaining reliability and performance.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to a distributed team of engineers.
  • Partner with product and engineering leadership to shape the team’s roadmap and make scope/trade-off decisions.
  • Drive architecture reviews, design doc culture, and engineering standards.
  • Lead processor engineering on EKS, managing pod lifecycle, autoscaling, resource optimization, and deployment safety.
  • Leverage AI tools to accelerate design, review, and implementation cycles.
  • Influence other feature teams on ingestion interfaces, APIs, and contracts.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production problems affecting customers.
  • Be available for limited on-call during critical deployment activities.
  • Mentor engineers to foster technical excellence, knowledge sharing, innovation, and coherence across timezones.

Requirements

  • Data engineering principles at enterprise scale: idempotency, deduplication, data quality validation, and observability.
  • Deep expertise in streaming and event-driven systems: Kafka consumer group design, partition strategy, offset management, schema evolution, and exactly-once semantics.
  • AI-first mindset with proficiency in spec-driven development.
  • Strong Java engineering for backend systems development.
  • REST API design and database programming.
  • Experience with distributed systems design, RPC, service discovery, and advanced OO concepts.
  • Kubernetes / EKS operational depth: pod specs, resource quotas, autoscaling (KEDA), Helm chart management, and deployment strategy for high-throughput workloads.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code proficiency: Terraform/Terragrunt for managing ingestion infrastructure.
  • Cloud infrastructure expertise: AWS services including MSK, EKS, S3, IAM, Lambda, and CodePipeline.
  • Experience reasoning about cost, multi-AZ resilience, and operational observability in AWS environments.
  • Cost-aware mindset, considering throughput-per-dollar and cost implications of architectural choices.
  • Demonstrated Staff-level technical leadership: architecture ownership, cross-team influence, mentorship, and setting high standards of engineering quality in a distributed team context.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
