About the Role

The Reproductive Health Assistant (RHA) is an essential part of the healthcare team providing comprehensive health education and direct patient care. RHAs perform high-quality, responsive, and efficient patient care delivery in a clean, safe, and comfortable health center, significantly impacting the patient experience. This role requires understanding and compliance with organizational protocols, policies, and procedures, including risk management and safety standards, while supporting the organization’s strategic plan and workplace inclusion initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients promptly and in a welcoming manner, providing high-quality care.
  • Interview patients and obtain medical history information.
  • Provide education to patients regarding the purpose of their visit.
  • Perform patient check-in and check-out.
  • Accurately update patient charts.
  • Confirm that all medication, equipment, and supplies are stocked in the health center, including sterile instruments.
  • Assist with patient discharge instructions.
  • Practice a patient-focused approach to healthcare, demonstrating respect, knowledge, compassion, and access to care.
  • Provide comprehensive education, accurate information, and answer questions objectively about medical services offered, including birth control, sexually transmitted infections, gender-affirming care, and pregnancy, in a caring, non-biased, non-judgmental, and non-directive manner.
  • Provide pregnancy options counseling in a comprehensive, non-directive, and non-coercive manner, ensuring patients are educated on all options.
  • Provide and explain Patient Education Sheets and Informed Consent Forms to patients, ensuring understanding and providing information in preferred languages for those with limited English proficiency.
  • Maintain medical supplies inventory, including stocking, ordering, and verifying receipt.
  • Accurately take and record patients’ demographic information, vital signs, and medical history.
  • Perform blood draws (venipuncture) and intramuscular (IM) injections.
  • Train less experienced Health Center team members in job functions/duties/protocols.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
  • Verify and complete requests for medical records per policy.
  • Maintain equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting, performing preventive maintenance, and initiating repair requests.
  • Review consent forms with patients and obtain informed consent for services and procedures.
  • Support the clinician by performing lab testing and vital signs, notifying the clinician of special concerns.
  • Review test results with patients and educate them on abnormal results, including treatment, follow-up, and referrals.
  • Consistently utilize an empathic approach to patient care delivery.
  • Provide compassionate care using a holistic approach, addressing patients’ physical, mental, social, and emotional needs.
  • Provide contraceptive supplies, prescribed medications, and IM injections as ordered by the clinician, including specific instructions on birth control methods.
  • Triage phone calls to clinicians as appropriate.
  • Review electronic practice management (EPM) and electronic health records (EHR) systems for alerts and advise patients of follow-up status or clinician recommendations.
  • Maintain awareness of clinic flow and visit cycle times, contributing to efficient care delivery.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times, using appropriate guidelines on release of information.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous quality improvement by reporting incidents timely and completing incident reports.
  • Comply with regulations from governing entities and health center protocols, including Patient Rights, Child Abuse identification and reporting, infection control, laboratory protocols, emergency evacuation, risk management, and OSHA safety standards.
  • Perform front office duties including greeting guests, directing calls, scheduling appointments, checking in/out patients, obtaining patient information, ensuring forms and consents are completed, supporting check-in/out areas, placing reminder calls, inspecting visitors/packages, observing security cameras and grounds, securing the building, completing closing procedures, preparing deposits, balancing cash drawers, and reviewing payment methods and insurance information.
  • Maintain laboratory, sterilization, temperature, and cleaning logs.
  • Handle lab specimens per organization protocols and perform laboratory testing as required by CLIA when ordered by the clinician.
  • Set up and clean laboratory area and exam rooms, including maintaining a clean arrangement, collecting and washing instruments, disposing of trash, and maintaining medical supplies and equipment.
  • Attend and participate in health center staff meetings and huddles.
  • Complete employee training for handling situations involving conduct that endangers the welfare of minors, including mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Accept responsibility for achieving health center annual goals regarding patient numbers, waiting time, show rate, payment accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
  • Adhere to the minimum necessary rule for accessing and using patient protected health information (PHI).
  • Embrace and use the organization’s ‘In This Together’ customer service standards with internal and external customers.
  • Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management.

Requirements

  • H/S Diploma or equivalent and 1 year of experience in customer service, healthcare, or social services environment.
  • An advanced degree may be substituted for up to 1 year of experience (e.g., Associates/Bachelor’s/Master’s).
  • When education is substituted for experience, a minimum of 1 year of customer service experience is required.
  • Medical Assistant or Certified Nurse Assistant or Phlebotomy or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate, national certification or diploma from a fully accredited medical assistant educational program may be substituted for up to 6 months of experience.
  • Electronic Practice Management system or Electronic Health Records system experience (EPM/EHR) is preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet.
  • Willingness and ability to adapt to change, including advances or new technology.
  • Excellent customer service skills and commitment to providing the highest level of customer satisfaction.
  • Must be able to work all health center hours of operation including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to travel and support other health center locations as required.
  • Fluency in Spanish/English may be required.
