About the Role
Redwood Materials is seeking a Battery Software Integration Engineer to develop the connection between automotive batteries and their software platforms, enabling grid-scale energy storage. This role involves transitioning from hardware-centric to software-defined energy storage, making automotive components reliable for grid use and serving as the lead technical point of contact for external OEMs.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the lead engineering voice bridging legacy automotive hardware and modern software infrastructure.
- Decode firmware, negotiate engineering solutions, and build software handshakes with tier-1 suppliers for second-life integration.
- Design and deploy translation layers and software gateways for integrating OEM battery packs into the centralized energy storage system.
- Develop containerized applications for external BMS communication, data parsing, and fault management using Rust and Python in Linux.
- Build resilient communication interfaces (CAN, Ethernet, Modbus) to handle OEM pack variations without compromising system stability.
- Collaborate with power electronics, site controller, controls teams, and internal BMS developers for harmonized operation.
- Conduct validation and testing using simulation tools, HIL platforms, and physical hardware to verify OEM BMS behavior and safety.
Requirements
- Proven track record in controls and software engineering with practical understanding of lithium-ion battery architectures, external BMS software, and pack-level integration.
- Demonstrated experience as a primary software POC with external suppliers, automotive OEMs, or internal cross-functional teams.
- Ability to lead complex software discussions, drive alignment, and steer reverse-engineering efforts.
- Proficiency in modern software engineering practices and languages (Rust, Python, C/C++).
- Expertise in automotive and industrial communication networks (CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet) and their diagnostic toolchains.
- Exceptional capability to reverse-engineer, troubleshoot, and adapt complex OEM electro-mechanical software systems for circular energy ecosystems.
