About the Role
Join Sarasota County's Solid Waste Department as a Maintenance Skilled Trades Worker II, performing a variety of maintenance, repair, and improvement projects to ensure facilities are safe, efficient, and operating optimally. This hands-on role offers opportunities for learning, growth, and making a difference.
Responsibilities
- Operate light and heavy equipment, including tractors, loaders, excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, skid steers, and powered hand tools.
- Perform land clearing, mowing, grading, ditch rehabilitation, erosion control, and culvert and pipe installation and repair.
- Conduct preventative maintenance and perform mechanical, hydraulic, and small engine repairs to minimize equipment downtime.
- Inspect, construct, maintain, and repair infrastructure supporting Solid Waste operations and landfill facilities.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical components, lighting systems, fixtures, switches, and related infrastructure.
- Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems, pumps, meters, piping, and related facility components.
- Construct, repair, and maintain fencing, gates, signage, bollards, roadblocks, and other site safety features.
- Perform welding, fabrication, carpentry, painting, and general building maintenance.
- Assist with the maintenance and repair of landfill gas, groundwater monitoring, and stormwater management systems.
- Utilize basic surveying equipment, apply approved herbicides under supervision, and support safe, efficient operation of landfill facilities.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or its equivalent.
- Three (3) years of experience in the operation of heavy and light equipment and applicable Infrastructure Services experience.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License at the time of hire.
- Must be able to acquire a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsements within six (6) months from the date of hire. Paid by the County!
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Subject to Passing Substance Screening: An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
