About the Role
Standard Bots is developing a robotics, vision, and networking platform to lower the barrier to entry for real-world automation. The control systems and embedded engineering team builds the foundational technologies that empower the company and entire industries. This role is critical in ensuring control quality across robotic products through modern engineering practices, operating at the hardware-software boundary.
Responsibilities
- Own control performance across products, including smooth motion, tracking accuracy, and high-fidelity impedance control.
- Design and own control-loop benchmarking and validation across communication architectures like CAN and EtherCAT.
- Analytically model in-house actuator plants, verify models through physical testing, and determine appropriate plant tolerance bands.
- Implement and document safety-rated monitoring and stop functions to certification rigor.
- Ensure maximal servo performance while maintaining stability and rejecting disturbances under various dynamic loading conditions.
- Debug complex system-level issues spanning software, firmware, electrical, or component behavior.
- Build test and diagnostic tooling for tuning, hardware characterization, and fault injection.
- Act as a technical bridge between hardware and software, advising leadership on technical strategy and mentoring engineers.
Requirements
- 5+ years of proven experience modelling control systems.
- 5+ years of proven experience tuning control loops on real-world systems.
- 5+ years of proven experience validating models through physical experiments on benchtop equipment.
- Strong classical controls fundamentals, including analytical and heuristic tuning, plant and controller modelling, gain and phase margin analysis, and bandwidth modelling and testing.
- Real-time signal processing and filtering expertise.
- Sufficient understanding of firmware, electrical, and mechanical systems to resolve issues at their intersections.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A proactive approach to prioritizing simplicity, reliability, and velocity.
- Experience with modern control techniques like MPC (nice to have).
- Experience with sensors, especially encoders, and sensor fusion (nice to have).
- Experience interfacing with robotic motion planning systems (nice to have).
- Electrical and board-level experience, including comfort with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and DMMs (nice to have).
