About the Role

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Senior Product Designer in the Technology Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This is a hybrid role with in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month. The ACLU Technology Department provides analytics, engineering, and product management/design expertise to advance the ACLU mission. The Product & Engineering division builds and maintains digital products and secure technical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own and drive the end-to-end design lifecycle for product initiatives across ACLU's National and Affiliate websites.
  • Utilize data (industry standards, quantitative data, A/B testing, and qualitative research) to understand user needs and inform design direction.
  • Explore design approaches and patterns using wireframes and prototypes to communicate concepts.
  • Request and incorporate feedback from Design, Product, and stakeholder partners into final designs.
  • Create high-fidelity mocks and prototypes, while exploring opportunities for future improvements.
  • Spec designs for Engineering implementation and collaborate with Engineers.
  • Lead Design and web accessibility UAT/QA for assigned projects.
  • Provide design strategy per project based on scope, timeline, and priority.
  • Serve as the Product Design representative partner to Product Managers and Engineering Leads.
  • Translate requirements and constraints into user-centric experiences.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers to communicate complex ideas to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Participate in brainstorms and provide constructive feedback on colleagues' projects.
  • Facilitate product and design decision-making by articulating rationale for solutions.
  • Collaboratively use and contribute to the developing Design System.
  • Balance raising product design standards with realistic considerations for timeline, scope, and feasibility.
  • Mentor and/or manage Product Design interns as assigned.
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Example work reflecting 5+ years (or equivalent experience) creating and shipping digital product designs with your role clearly defined in each project.
  • Proficiency in digital design tools (Figma).
  • Proficiency in work without AI support or tooling.
  • Strong foundation in UX/UI standards and best practices.
  • Experience designing for web across device types, sizes, and browsers.
  • Experience working within and contributing to evolving design systems and brand guidelines.
  • Commitment to following Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) criteria in all designs, documentation, and acceptance testing.
  • Strategic problem-solving skills and the capacity to distill complex information into meaningful concepts, ideas, and designs.
  • Experience presenting and defending design decisions, industry standards, and process approaches to stakeholders.
  • Openness to giving and accepting constructive feedback and collaborating with fellow Designers, Product Managers, and Engineers.
  • Ability to operate independently within all phases of the design lifecycle.
  • Adaptability to ambiguous and shifting requirements and timelines.
