About the Role

ProPublica is seeking a creative product manager to enhance its digital systems, experiences, and experimentation engines for fundraising and membership. This role involves shaping the reader journey to membership, bridging hands-on execution with strategy, and sustaining independent journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Connect product strategy, roadmap, and operations for digital fundraising and membership systems, acting as the primary product voice for donors.
  • Translate organizational fundraising goals into product priorities, metrics, and technical decisions, balancing short-term optimization with long-term improvements.
  • Facilitate collaboration between development and product teams to ensure donation and membership experiences are built, optimized, and maintained effectively.
  • Define key metrics, orchestrate systems for reliable data and insights, and evaluate progress, communicating findings and tradeoffs with an analyst.
  • Improve donor acquisition, conversion rates, average gift size, recurring gifts, and retention using data, experimentation, and research.
  • Lead cross-functional teams (engineers, designers, data analysts) to define outcomes, write requirements, and deliver scalable products.
  • Manage the health and evolution of systems supporting membership revenue, including donation platforms, payment processing, messaging, personalization, and experimentation tools.
  • Evaluate and manage third-party platforms and vendors, recommending build, buy, or integrate strategies, and configuring integrations and automations.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience managing consumer, subscriber, or donor-supported products with complex user journeys and conversion funnels.
  • Experience working across technical and nontechnical teams, navigating competing priorities through influence and trust.
  • Comfort selecting, integrating, and improving third-party platforms (CRM, CDP, ESP, A/B testing, payments).
  • Fluency with technical concepts, including system architecture, APIs, schema, and data models.
  • Strong product judgment informed by data, experimentation, and qualitative insights.
  • Analytical rigor and hands-on experience with analytics platforms and experimentation tools.
  • Strong project management skills, including prioritization and managing dependencies.
  • Ability to make ideas tangible early through wireframing, PRDs, or prototyping.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to align stakeholders.
  • Curiosity, adaptability, and a genuine interest in how membership revenue sustains independent journalism.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
