About the Role

Provide clear, practical legal advice on a broad range of housing and local government litigation matters. Help the Council make lawful, fair, and robust decisions that stand up to scrutiny and support effective services for residents.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on tenancy management, possession, anti-social behaviour, injunctions, disrepair, leasehold matters, homelessness appeals, allocations, judicial reviews, policy issues, and other civil, commercial, and regulatory litigation matters.
  • Manage own caseload, draft and defend proceedings, and prepare advice and legal documents.
  • Work closely with officers across the Council to find practical, legally sound solutions.
  • Advise on housing policy and strategy.
  • Prepare judicial review responses.
  • Support decision-making.
  • Appear as an advocate where appropriate.
  • Handle complex, high-profile, and politically sensitive matters with confidence.
  • Ensure deadlines are met, procedures are followed, and records are kept up to date.
  • Keep pace with changes in housing and public law, helping client departments understand practical implications.

Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of CILEx entitled to practise in England and Wales.
  • Strong knowledge of housing and general litigation, including experience of possession, anti-social behaviour, disrepair, homelessness appeals, judicial review, and wider local government litigation.
  • Confidence to advise on sensitive and urgent matters.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement.
  • Ability to work constructively with senior officers, Members, and service colleagues.
  • Ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, practical advice that supports robust decision-making.
  • Strong drafting, advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Organised, resilient, and able to manage a varied caseload independently.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a supportive legal team.
  • Attention to detail combined with a practical approach.
  • Ability to balance legal precision with an understanding of the Council’s wider priorities.

  • New hires will start at the minimum of the advertised salary range.
