About the Role
The Heritage Building & Facilities Manager will oversee the day-to-day building operations of Battersea Arts Centre, a busy and vibrant arts, community and events space. This role is key in preserving and enhancing the venue’s charm and atmosphere, ensuring the historic Grade II* listed building, private road, and community garden are maintained to the highest standards. The role drives sustainability commitments through innovative and environmentally conscious practices and enhances the experience for visitors and staff. This position may require responding to emergency call outs and working out of hours.
Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day operations of upkeep and maintenance across BAC’s building, private road, and community garden.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and maintain facilities to meet customer service standards and health & safety regulations.
- Monitor and deliver the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule.
- Keep administration, record keeping, invoicing, and inspections up to date for the annual health and safety audit.
- Develop and implement new systems as necessary and ensure clear and timely H&S reporting.
- Personally maintain and repair facilities (plumbing, electrics, painting, etc.) to avoid significant contractor costs.
- Ensure the building is fully compliant in all areas of health & safety, licensing requirements, statutory duties, and general best practice.
- Oversee and strategically engage with sustainability reporting and carbon footprint improvements.
- Line manage and support the Building Maintenance Technician, identifying development and training needs.
- Supervise the Building Maintenance Technician’s work schedule and rota.
- Act as the main point of contact for internal queries about building maintenance.
- Attend weekly delivery meetings and share information across teams.
- Manage and monitor the maintenance ticket system, ensuring prompt resolution of requests.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key contractors (housekeeping, lift servicing, fire & security).
- Collaborate with the Inclusion Manager to enhance BAC’s facilities for better access.
- Coordinate with delivery, programming, and events teams for consistent upkeep of spaces.
- Lead on sustainability across BAC’s operations, identifying challenges and sourcing solutions.
- Deliver annual environmental reporting and monitor energy usage and waste management.
- Oversee improvements to building infrastructure and equipment to support sustainability goals.
- Regularly review contracts and compliance certification.
- Manage the Asset Management System and coordinate across teams.
- Manage and maintain the building’s systems and services including BMS, internet, network, hardware, waste and recycling, pest control, CCTV, ventilation, plant, and lifts.
- Ensure robust safety procedures are in place for teams working in the venue.
- Contribute to the planned BMS upgrade project.
- Oversee weekly checks of all internal and external building areas, ensuring findings are recorded and preventative maintenance is planned.
- Ensure compliance testing is completed (e.g. water, electrical, fire safety, emergency lighting).
- Lead sustainability monitoring and reporting, working with managers to improve practices.
- Ensure systems are in place for effective upkeep of equipment, supplies, and COSHH facilities.
- Arrange regular clear outs of old, broken or unwanted equipment.
- Act as a keyholder and respond to building emergencies, including occasional out-of-hours support.
- Manage service contractors and maintain the approved suppliers list.
- Supervise external contractors to ensure safe, professional, and high-standard delivery of work.
- Support the delivery and upkeep of artists’ bedrooms.
- Be an active participant in BAC’s wider creative life, attending performances and events.
- Contribute to staff meetings, cross-team collaborations, and organisational initiatives.
- Maintain professional development, staying informed of trends in hospitality, retail, and event services.
- Ensure BAC’s values of inclusivity, sustainability, and generosity are reflected in work and leadership.
- Undertake any other duties as reasonably required.
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of health & safety legislation and best practice procedures in building maintenance.
- Good understanding of the safe and effective use of power and hand tools.
- An interest in sustainable practices.
- Practical experience of managing maintenance and external supplier contracts.
- Practical experience in managing premises and facilities operations in a public venue.
- Practical experience in one or more of the following skillsets: general repairs, painting and decorating, electrical, joinery and plumbing.
- Strong efficiency and organization with the ability to prioritise maintenance tasks effectively and within time restraints.
- Excellent office and administrative skills including MS Office.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
