About the Role
Athena Club is seeking an experienced Senior Manager, Product Innovation to own the front end of their physical product funnel. This role involves leading ideation, translating trends into product opportunities, and developing business cases for new products. The ideal candidate will be creative and rigorous, capable of developing innovative products while ensuring feasibility and adherence to standards.
Responsibilities
- Own and evolve the multi-year innovation pipeline, balancing line extensions with blue-sky innovation.
- Identify and articulate whitespace opportunities based on consumer needs, science, and category gaps.
- Develop compelling concept briefs including target consumer, insight, hero benefit, and point of difference.
- Maintain and defend a portfolio of ideas, making recommendations for advancement.
- Serve as an internal authority on macro, category, ingredient, and format trends.
- Track the competitive and retail landscape, benchmarking against key competitors.
- Translate trend signals and consumer insight into prioritized, actionable opportunity areas.
- Design and interpret early-stage consumer inputs to validate demand and refine concepts.
- Partner with external formulators and labs to shape early formula direction.
- Identify, evaluate, and source new partners to expand development capabilities.
- Build technical feasibility into concepts, screening for clean standards, safety, cost, and manufacturability.
- Direct competitive formula benchmarking to define product performance benchmarks.
- Own initial formula execution and submissions to prove out concepts.
- Define stage-gate criteria and consistently hold the bar for concept advancement.
- Build the business case for priority concepts, including market size, retail fit, and financial analysis.
- Present recommendations and innovation storytelling to leadership and retail partners.
- Lead fragrance strategy for innovation projects, defining olfactive direction and identifying scent whitespace.
- Write fragrance briefs and partner with fragrance houses through the creative process.
- Balance creative ambition with practical constraints like IFRA standards, allergens, and cost.
- Build and maintain an internal olfactive library and point of view on the brand's scent signature.
Requirements
- 5+ years in product development, innovation, R&D, or brand/innovation strategy, with significant experience in beauty or personal care.
- Demonstrated ownership of products from concept through launch in both DTC and retail environments.
- Working fluency in personal care/beauty formulation, including ingredient and process knowledge.
- Fluency in personal care clean standards and safety/perception frameworks.
- Strong command of consumer and market insight tools and methods.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized, self-directed, and comfortable managing multiple early-stage projects.
