About the Role
Mastercard Asia Pacific global markets legal team supports the Asia Pacific business by negotiating and drafting contracts, managing licensing, franchise, marketing, promotions, products, services, regulatory affairs, M&A, joint ventures, restructurings, dispute resolutions, and operational issues.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for all legal aspects of the business covering primarily Japan and Korea, with additional project-based or pan-region work.
- Review and negotiate contracts with customers, merchants, and suppliers.
- Support applications for regulatory licenses and monitor regulatory developments in assigned countries, ensuring ongoing compliance.
- Assist senior management teams in assigned countries with managing legal and commercial risks.
- Instruct and oversee external legal advisors in assigned countries.
- Address issues related to privacy law, data protection, and anti-money laundering.
- Manage jurisdictional and commercial complexities impacting Mastercard's business in the region.
- Support merger, acquisition, and joint venture activities.
- Assist and support the Public Policy and Franchise Department.
- Conduct regional training and monitoring of global Law Department policies and contracts.
- Collaborate with global staff on agreements for project implementation in the Asia Pacific region.
- Oversee and coordinate company corporate secretarial services for assigned countries.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor from an established and reputable law school.
- Post-graduate qualifications (e.g., Masters at Law or LLM in an English environment) from an established university.
- Familiarity with law and regulations in the banking and payments space is considered favorably.
- Minimum of 9 years of post-qualification experience.
- Relevant post-qualification experience in general commercial legal matters in a reputable law firm and an MNC.
- In-house experience in an MNC is strongly desired.
- Fluent in English.
- Fluency in Japanese is viewed favorably.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to balance facilitating the business and protecting the company's interests.
- Ability to contribute and operate effectively within a diverse multicultural organization.
- Quick learner, stress resistant, ability to grasp complex new business concepts, good commercial acumen, and creative problem-solving approach.
- Knowledge of banking or financial services industry (ideally cards, payments, settlement, etc.).
- Experience providing legal advice to organizations involved in sponsorship, loyalty rewards, advertising, marketing, promotions, gaming and lotteries, licensing, franchising, etc.
- Experience handling competition law issues.
- Abide by Mastercard’s security policies and practices.
- Ensure the confidentiality and integrity of information.
- Report any suspected information security violation or breach.
- Complete all periodic mandatory security trainings.
