About the Role
As the Engineering Manager, Data Platform, you will be the technical and people leader for our Data Engineering team. You will own the responsibilities of developing and maintaining Cover Genius Data Platform. To drive success in this role, you will have hands-on experience designing and implementing modern cloud Data platforms, with strong SQL and Python skills. As the Engineering Manager, you will lead the team that builds and operates the platform, balancing delivery with reliability. Regular collaboration with Data Analytics, Data Operations, Data Science, Product Engineering and other data users will be key in ensuring the availability and accuracy they depend on.
Responsibilities
- Lead a team of Data Engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee the design, implementation, and operation of efficient and scalable data pipelines to collect, process, and store large volumes of data from diverse sources including SQL databases, APIs, and streaming services.
- Define and own the strategic roadmap for our Data Platform (BigQuery, Airflow, dbt, Dataflow), ensuring scalability, reliability and cost-effectiveness against agreed KPIs.
- Leverage best-practice software engineering (CI/CD, IaC, Code Reviews, Testing, Observability) to drive high quality and sustainable delivery across the team.
- Establish and enforce robust data governance, security and privacy frameworks to meet regulatory and internal compliance standards.
- Partner with other Data teams to build data models that drive business performance metrics.
Requirements
- Minimum 7 years of experience in Data Engineering, with at least 2 years leading or managing Data Engineering teams in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
- Experience implementing data quality, testing and observability practices in the Data Engineering team.
- Extensive, hands-on experience building and maintaining Data Warehouses e.g. BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift and data orchestration tools e.g. Airflow.
- Expert-level proficiency in SQL and strong coding skills in Python, with a track record of delivering reliable and scalable data solutions.
- High-Performance Data Modeling experience.
- Deep technical knowledge of warehouse optimization techniques (clustering, partitioning, incremental dbt strategy, caching) to minimize compute scan volumes and accelerate query response times.
- Experience with streaming/event-driven pipelines e.g. Google Pub/Sub, Kafka, CDC tooling is nice to have.
- FinOps & Cost Optimization: Proven track record of managing and optimizing cloud data platform costs (data warehouse capacity/slot management)
- Track record of adopting AI-assisted development practices within a team — evaluating tools, setting standards for their use and measuring productivity and quality impact.
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop a team of technical experts.
- A strategic mindset, with the ability to align data initiatives with broader business goals and effectively manage stakeholder expectations.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a deep sense of ownership, from technical architecture to team performance.
- A passion for staying current with new practices and technologies in the data engineering field and empowering your team to do the same.
- You are self-motivated, reliable, and able to drive projects to completion in a fast-paced environment.
