About the Role
We are seeking a part-qualified or qualified Senior Tax Specialist to join our Accountancy-as-a-Service team. This role focuses on providing expert tax advice and support to our client portfolio, with the flexibility to assist with small business and startup advisory queries. You will collaborate with the accountancy delivery team to ensure clients receive accurate tax guidance and support broader small business needs.
Responsibilities
- Act as the specialist tax lead for SME and startup clients, covering corporation tax, VAT, and personal tax for owner-managed businesses.
- Review and support the preparation of tax computations and returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Identify tax planning opportunities and efficiencies for clients, focusing on business structuring, reliefs, and allowances.
- Serve as the primary contact for client tax queries, escalating complex issues as needed.
- Provide advisory support for small business and startup queries when the primary advisor is unavailable.
- Stay updated on UK tax legislation changes and communicate relevant updates or risks.
- Collaborate with the accountancy service delivery team to integrate tax considerations into client account management.
- Support new client onboarding by advising on appropriate tax structures.
- Assist in developing internal guidance, templates, and resources for consistent tax advice.
- Identify opportunities for process, tool, or client education improvements related to tax compliance.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in a specialist tax role, preferably in an accountancy practice, accountancy-as-a-service environment, or in-house tax function.
- Part-qualified or qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CTA, or ATT) with specialist tax knowledge.
- Strong, demonstrable cross-border/international tax knowledge, including VAT/GST across jurisdictions, transfer pricing basics, permanent establishment considerations, and cross-border VAT/duty implications.
- Prior experience within an e-commerce business or advising e-commerce/online retail clients is ideal.
- Proven experience advising SME, startup, or owner-managed business clients.
- Strong technical knowledge of UK corporation tax, VAT, and personal tax as it applies to small businesses.
- Ability to provide broader small business/startup advice confidently when required.
- Confident communication skills, able to translate technical tax concepts into clear, practical advice.
- Proficiency with accounting/tax software (e.g., Xero, Sage) and Excel/Google Sheets.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple client relationships and priorities.
- A collaborative, client-first mindset, comfortable working cross-functionally.
