About the Role

This internship supports the protection and restoration of biodiversity in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) through volunteer engagement. The work is primarily field-based, focusing on ecological restoration of natural areas, particularly those hosting rare plant and animal species. The intern will collaborate with National Park Service staff and volunteers on management activities, including invasive plant removal, site protection, revegetation, and technology use for tracking work. A key component involves planning and facilitating volunteer stewardship workdays with an educational focus, alongside monitoring rare and endangered plants.

Responsibilities

Conduct vegetation management, including invasive plant control and native species planting.
Plan and lead volunteer workdays, providing direction on plant identification, safety, and techniques.
Develop and share educational materials for volunteers.
Compile volunteer data and enter associated data into park databases.
Assist with mapping rare plant populations and assessing population size.
Manage field data related to rare plant monitoring and invasive species removal.
Perform tool cleaning and maintenance.
Coordinate schedules and events.
Attend relevant meetings and trainings.

Requirements

Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
Must be between the ages of 18-30 (35 if a veteran).
Must undergo a background check if selected.
Must have a valid driver’s license to operate a government vehicle.
Access to a personal vehicle is recommended.
An active interest in plants, habitat restoration, and community engagement.
Experience working outdoors in challenging environmental conditions.
Ability to carry up to 30 pounds.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work well in a team while balancing individual responsibilities.
Experience working with or leading groups.
Ability to supervise, train, and inspire others.
Ability to work with adults and children from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to use various types of software (Microsoft Office Suite).
Strong commitment to the preservation and protection of native plant and wildlife communities on public lands.
Education and/or experience in biological sciences, particularly ecological restoration, environmental science, environmental studies, natural resource management, plant biology, ecology, or horticulture.
Ability to work independently with little supervision and self-motivated to complete tasks on time.
