About the Role

Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) seeks a dedicated Academic Specialist to join the Academic Support Unit (ASU). This role focuses on designing and delivering academic intervention services to at-risk students, aiming to break the cycle of poverty and ensure children thrive in school and life. The ideal candidate will be a certified teacher or master’s level professional passionate about supporting afterschool programming and quality learning experiences.

Responsibilities

Lead the development and delivery of intensive learning interventions for at-risk students.
Design and revise remedial units of instruction in core subjects.
Oversee the delivery of instruction by academic tutors through class observations.
Ensure tutors provide appropriate learning interventions for students with special needs and English Language Learners.
Teach selected classes, potentially serving as a lab site for tutors.
Organize and analyze students’ academic performance data to determine learning needs.
Identify students for academic intervention and devise groupings.
Create assessments and monitor student progress.
Prepare summary reports of assessed learning needs for the management team.
Provide quantitative and qualitative student data reports to leadership.
Collaborate with the management team in the development of units, lessons, and activities.
Assist in the design and frequency of co-curricular units.
Provide instructional guidance to teaching artists and activity specialists.
Identify or develop supplementary learning resources and strategies.
Identify and recommend resources needed for quality learning support programs.
Provide written feedback on the integration of literacy and STEM-based learning.
Oversee the hiring, coaching, and supervision of tutors and instructional support staff.
Lead the selection and onboarding process for tutors.
Conduct observations of instructional staff and provide feedback and coaching.
Develop and deliver professional development sessions for tutors and instructional staff.
Identify and attend professional development sessions for teaching professionals.
Work collaboratively with program colleagues, public school partners, and HCZ departments.
Monitor and advise on learning interventions for students with special needs and English Language Learners.
Lead the academic aspects of transition planning for incoming 6th- and 9th-grade students.
Develop and coordinate standard academic support services for HCZ students.
Design and co-facilitate parent and student meetings to discuss student performance and college readiness.
Participate in program special events and staff meetings.

Requirements

Commitment to HCZ’s mission, vision, and values
Master’s Degree in education or related area with at least 4 years of teaching experience, OR bachelor’s degree in Education or related field with at least 5 years of teaching experience with students in an urban/low-income community
Teaching experience in an after-school setting is highly desirable
Familiarity with best practices in curriculum building and lesson planning
Knowledge of literacy and or STEM-based enrichment and lesson plan writing
Knowledge of Standards-based instruction combined with an understanding of the challenges facing students in a low-income urban setting
Strong communication skills, including clear and concise writing and speech
Ability to adapt tone and level of details needed for the targeted audience
Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Understanding and interacting with individuals of diverse backgrounds, skills, and abilities
Knowledge of research on college readiness and early warning indicators for students
