About the Role
Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada (VLRC) is seeking an Occupational Therapist to empower Canadians living with vision loss to live safely and independently. This role involves providing client-centered rehabilitation, mobility training, and daily living skills programs.
Responsibilities
- Completes assessments of clients in various settings, analyzing objective, subjective, and functional findings.
- Establishes realistic, measurable, and time-limited treatment goals and develops treatment plans.
- Ensures occupational therapy treatments are initiated with informed consent.
- Provides direct treatment and support to informal caregivers, school personnel, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participates in case conferences and consults with the healthcare team for a holistic approach to care.
- Completes reassessments to review patient progress and treatment goals, reporting to the healthcare team.
- Provides support and consultation to individuals and families regarding adjustment to vision loss.
- Offers consultation, public education, and in-service training from an OT perspective.
- Teaches sighted guide to family members and allied professionals.
- Completes assessments and recommendations for adaptation aids, assistive devices, and equipment.
- Completes documentation and maintains patient records in accordance with professional standards and organizational policies.
- Teaches adaptive skills for independent living in personal management, household management, communication, leisure, basic orientation & mobility, and basic technology training.
- Teaches concept development, spatial and sensory awareness, pre-cane techniques, mobility aids, and environmental assessments.
- Acts as a key resource for accessible design and the built environment.
- Serves as a resource for VLRC employees, service providers, school personnel, long-term care facilities, and the community by providing educational programs.
- Attends and actively participates in occupational therapy team meetings and general staff meetings.
- Maintains professional knowledge and skills.
- Prioritizes occupational therapy services according to the VLRC Waiting List Management Policy.
- Interacts with clients, families, and caregivers to develop vision-related goals and intervention programs.
- Builds and maintains working relationships with professionals in other agencies and community groups.
- Educates community partners about VLRC and its specialized services.
- Participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
- Advocates on behalf of clients in medical clinics, schools, etc.
- Instructs and supervises students and Occupational Therapy Assistants.
Requirements
- Degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy and current certificate of registration with the College of Occupational Therapists within a specified jurisdiction.
- Related professional experience normally attained over two years in an Occupational Therapy role.
- Related experience in a community-based setting is an asset.
- Previous Stroke Rehab experience is preferred.
- Experience supervising support personnel is an asset.
- Ability to utilize computer and software programs.
- Excellent facilitation skills in both group and individual situations.
- Good organization and time management skills.
- Master of Occupational Therapy Degree.
- Current practicing member of the designated provincial Occupational Therapy regulatory body.
- Knowledge of normal and abnormal early childhood development.
- Registration or eligibility for registration on the Registry of Autism Serves Providers (RASP).
- 3 or more years of experience working with individuals with vision loss.
- Willingness to work flexible hours.
- Willingness to work in a variety of settings (in client home, outdoors, daycare, etc.).
- Travel is required.
- Successful candidate may be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check.
