About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled z/OS Mainframe Storage Engineer to manage, support, and optimize enterprise mainframe storage infrastructure. This role is responsible for the installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, monitoring, and modernization of storage platforms supporting IBM z/OS environments. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of storage management, including disk and tape storage, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, storage capacity planning, replication technologies, and storage software lifecycle management. The role also involves infrastructure design, hardware upgrades, automation initiatives, and proactive monitoring to ensure maximum performance, availability, and resilience of business-critical systems. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in IBM mainframe storage technologies, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate across infrastructure, operations, and application support teams within a complex enterprise environment.
Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of mainframe disk and storage administration, including installation, removal, upgrades, updates, provisioning, restoration, and ongoing support.
- Perform daily operational activities, including health checks, incident management, monitoring, and issue resolution.
- Plan and implement storage capacity expansions and infrastructure changes.
- Configure, administer, and maintain storage resources supporting databases, VSAM files, work datasets, and sort spaces.
- Administer and support storage management products including CA Disk and related utilities.
- Install, test, evaluate, and maintain storage hardware and software solutions.
- Perform z/OS hardware planning activities including IODF maintenance, LPAR configuration, HMC administration, and associated system changes.
- Administer backup, recovery, archival, and disaster recovery solutions.
- Install, maintain, and upgrade storage-related products using SMP/E and z/OSMF.
- Manage storage volume allocation, capacity planning, and utilization reporting.
- Support and participate in disaster recovery testing and recovery exercises.
- Perform root cause analysis for storage-related incidents and implement preventive actions.
- Collaborate with systems programming, network, database, and application teams to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Utilize automation tools such as NetView, System Automation (SA), CA OPS/MVS, and similar products to improve operational efficiency.
- Automate repetitive storage administration and monitoring tasks.
- Design, implement, and support IBM zSeries storage architectures and solutions.
- Ensure compliance with organizational security, governance, and operational standards.
- Maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, and support runbooks.
Requirements
- Typically 8 to 15+ years of experience in Mainframe Infrastructure and z/OS Storage Administration.
- Strong hands-on experience supporting IBM z/OS storage environments in large-scale enterprise organizations.
- Experience with IBM DS8000 series storage, virtual tape systems, disaster recovery solutions, and storage management products.
- Proven experience managing storage capacity, backup and recovery, replication technologies, and enterprise storage operations.
- Experience working in Banking, Financial Services, Insurance, or other highly regulated, mission-critical environments preferred.
- Strong expertise in IBM DS8000 Series Storage (DS8870, DS8K Family), DSCLI, GDPS, PPRC Metro Mirror, DFHSM, DFDSS, ICKDSF, SMS, RMM Customization, and z/OS IODF Administration.
- Experience installing and upgrading IBM storage hardware and software.
- Strong understanding of Mainframe Disk Storage Management, Storage Provisioning, Capacity Planning, Backup & Recovery, and Disaster Recovery.
- Experience supporting TS7720 Virtual Tape Systems, Storage Grid Architectures, and PPRC Replication Environments.
- Experience with EMC DLm Virtual Tape systems including installation, upgrade, and configuration.
- Experience with Broadcom/Brocade storage networking solutions and FICON connectivity.
- Strong knowledge of z/OS, JCL, Job Scheduling, and Mainframe Storage Infrastructure.
- Experience utilizing SMP/E and z/OSMF for software maintenance and deployment.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with CA-1, CA Vantage, CA Disk, TDMF/TDMFS, NetView, System Automation (SA z/OS), and CA OPS/MVS.
- Knowledge of storage performance monitoring and reporting tools.
- Experience with enterprise-scale storage migration projects.
- Familiarity with storage automation and infrastructure modernization initiatives.
- Understanding of IBM Parallel Sysplex and GDPS high availability architectures.
- Experience supporting global data centers and geographically dispersed environments.
- Exposure to audit, compliance, and regulatory requirements within financial services organizations.
- IBM Storage or IBM Z certifications preferred.
