About the Role

The Personalization team enhances music and podcast discovery through features like Blend and Discover Weekly. We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the Conversation Product Area, focusing on building a unified agent intelligence layer for Spotify's audio experiences. This role involves leading the development of the Agent Engine, evaluation infrastructure, Search Brain, and the Speak Platform (voice technology). You will collaborate with senior architects and product leadership in consumer AI, making critical architectural decisions and managing a large engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Own engineering execution and technical direction for the Conversation Product Area, including the Agent Engine, evaluation infrastructure, Search platform, AI Voice platform (Speak), and consumer agentic features.
  • Co-lead the Product Area in a paired product/engineering model, partnering closely with a product counterpart.
  • Manage a team of approximately 70 engineers, including Senior Engineering Managers and Staff/Principal engineers.
  • Drive the migration of existing agentic infrastructure onto the shared Agent Engine, balancing migration speed with product roadmaps.
  • Own the technical strategy for Spotify's first-party voice investment, including build vs. buy decisions and team organization.
  • Define and enforce engineering quality standards, including code review discipline and test coverage for AI-assisted development.
  • Participate in the broader leadership group to co-develop the operating model for capacity management, project prioritization, and engineering culture.
  • Represent the Conversation PA's engineering perspective in company-wide architecture and steerco conversations.

Requirements

  • Deeply technical with the ability to evaluate architecture proposals and contribute technically.
  • Experience running large engineering organizations through platform consolidations, migrations, or evolutions.
  • Experience with at least two of the following: LLM-based agent systems and orchestration, evaluation/eval-infrastructure design, large-scale retrieval or search systems, or speech/voice ML systems and production voice infrastructure.
  • Experience managing managers and building a scalable management structure.
  • Track record of building strong, nimble teams with experience in restructuring and adapting to changing priorities.
