About the Role
The early vision support program provides specialized educational support for children with blindness, visual impairment, or impending visual impairment from infancy to school entry. The goal is to promote visual perception, develop compensatory strategies using other senses, sensitize and adapt the environment, and increase independence in daily life.
Responsibilities
- Assessment and support planning: Determine individual development and support needs (including for non-verbal children), evaluate ophthalmological findings, and create individual support plans.
- Child-focused support: Guidance on using vision (vision training), promoting tactile-kinesthetic perception, exercises for orientation and mobility (e.g., initial use of a white cane).
- Consultation and support: Advise parents and caregivers in the home environment (home visits) and support integration/inclusion in daycare centers.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration: Cooperate with ophthalmologists, orthoptists, therapists (occupational therapy, physical therapy), and other providers of specialized early vision support.
- Documentation: Ensure through written documentation of support sessions and summarize them in support reports; independently plan and bill support appointments.
Requirements
- Completed degree or training in special needs education, occupational therapy, physical therapy, special education (focus on vision), rehabilitation education, or caregiving for the disabled with additional training in visual impairment.
- High level of empathy, patience, creativity, and communication skills.
- Willingness to conduct home visits (exclusively mobile work).
- Willingness for further training in the field of visual impairment.
