About the Role
We are seeking an exceptional, entrepreneurial technical product manager to own the roadmap, execution, discovery, and vision for Nova, our autonomous underwriting initiative. This is Nova's first product hire, joining a small, high-caliber, and growing team. You will work at the intersection of engineering, underwriting, and business leadership to define the future of autonomous underwriting for the insurance industry. This role requires a founder-like mindset, intellectual curiosity, and a drive for impact.
Responsibilities
- Own the product end to end: vision, discovery, prioritization, execution, UX, and design decisions.
- Prioritize ruthlessly and clearly define what is not being built.
- Shape design and engineering staffing against the roadmap.
- Be accountable for results, including underwriter adoption, autonomous work completion, accuracy, and winning deals through autonomous motions.
- Deeply understand the user by sitting with underwriters and reviewing submissions to identify areas for system improvement.
- Translate user needs into requirements and edge case coverage.
- Own the definition of 'correct' by shaping the eval framework, defining what gets measured, materiality thresholds, regression blocking criteria, and how field-level results aggregate.
- Set the standard for autonomous underwriting at Shepherd, defining agent reasoning, action triggers, deferral criteria, and trust-earning mechanisms.
- Own the surfacing of uncertainty and the user experience for system handoffs.
- Ship fast with engineering by writing prompts, analyzing eval data, identifying problem areas (retrieval, model behavior, data modeling), and using AI coding agents for prototyping and unblocking.
- Write code when it's the quickest path to a solution without compromising quality.
Requirements
- 4+ years in product management with ownership of a hard technical product's direction.
- Demonstrated ability to build and move quickly.
- Technical proficiency: ability to read a PR, contribute to architecture discussions, write SQL, and reason about model behavior.
- Experience building things, either professionally or personally.
- Experience shipping AI into production, understanding the difference between a demo and a reliable system.
- Informed opinions on evals and model quality.
- Statistical literacy: comfort reasoning about distributions and thresholds, and interrogating metrics.
- Willingness to gain deep domain knowledge in construction risk.
- Direct communication style: clear writing, in-person disagreement, and decision-making without extensive decks.
- Opinionated, high agency, and experimental approach: forming and arguing for a point of view, proactively seeking work, and running experiments to resolve ambiguity.
