About the Role

Assist students with academic and behavior support in special education and regular classrooms, both in-person and virtually. This role complements the instructional program to maximize student learning and assists in behavior management and student access to the educational environment.

Responsibilities

• Work with students in small groups or one-to-one assignments to reinforce learning activities.
• Assist in the implementation of behavior intervention plans.
• Facilitate social interactions and foster positive relationships between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.
• Model appropriate behavior and attitudes, and provide emotional support and general guidance.
• Support students to be active participants on field trips and school assemblies or productions.
• Provide testing accommodations, including supervising students completing tests in a separate location or during extended time.
• Provide the Education Specialist with information on student progress through observation, daily contact, and maintenance of accurate data trackers.
• Assist in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, and cooperative classroom and learning environment.
• Assist physically disabled students with personal hygiene and grooming functions.
• Report suspected health problems to the appropriate school personnel.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and classroom information.
• Maintain instructional program in case of temporary absence of the Education Specialist.
• Attend and participate in IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and Student Study Meetings.
• Maintain professional standards and competence through participation in professional growth opportunities.
• Maintain consistent and on-time attendance during school work hours.
• Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Paid or volunteer experience working with or serving individuals with academic, behavioral, or functional needs preferred.
• High school diploma or the equivalent.
• A.A. degree or B.A. degree (or minimum 48 units in process) or Pass the ETS ParaPro Assessment (passing score = 460) or CBEST exams (for Title I paraprofessionals whose duties include instructional support).

• Possess strong content area knowledge.
• Strong skills building relationships with students, families, and communities.
• Communicate well with students, families, and colleagues.
• Proficient knowledge of Google Suite applications (Google Classroom, Hangout, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.).
• Ability to learn and utilize instructional technology to support in-class and distance learning (i.e. Zoom, Nearpod).
• Ability to navigate school and classroom settings.
• Ability to access and utilize technology.
• Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-20 lbs.
• Physical agility to move self in various positions including kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping and reaching overhead.
• Ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives.
• Ability to work with interruptions.
• Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
• Ability to read, calculate, and perform routine math problems.
• Ability to memorize and recall objects and people.

Skills
